Redex - does anyone use (and how often)?

Featured Replies

I'm wondering if anyone has used it in their TDI? Also, how often do you use it - every tank or every other tankful? Has it improved performance/economy? And... is it worth the money?!

Thanks

It's borrax and besides Skoda don't approve any "additives" for their engines

I've used their injector cleaner about halfway between each service, as the dealer once admitted they put it in to reduce smoking. But I've never used their cetane enhancer or whatever it is. The injector cleaner appears to reduce smoking, but might also be the cause of my mystery engine management light (that or the caning the car got at Bruntingthorpe recently! :o )

There is one that is supposedly recommended for improving performance, although I'll be damned if I can remember what it's called. Try searching through Decron's posts - he's a fan of the stuff...

i used a bottle on my petrol at 10k miles and it seemed to clear something in the system but its not something i would put in everyweek as if its picked up on a warrenty claim you lose your warrenty.

I was thinking only of the cetane enhancer here... What is, er, Borrax?

Millers Powersport 4

Oh and to the OP Borrax could be like Borax, but I suspect it's more like two dangley things associated with men.

Borrax=******

I ve used Millers a few times and I dont notice any difference in performance. I dare say it might clean injectors etc etc. How would Skoda now if you had used it?.

Skoda would know you have used it by doing an analysis of the fuel. Eg unlikely but possible.

A double dose of millers pre MOT was always used to clean out the engine on my old cars and it worked very well too IMHO.

I use millers sport 4 every 2 months or so, and a bottle of forte fuel treatment every 10k

Redex (or indeed any other make of fuel system/injector cleaner) for petrol engines and diesels is widely used throughout the car, truck & motorcycle industry. With todays modern fuels, which contrary to popular belief, burn in quite a dirty way due to the massive heat generated by the combustion process...the only way to keep the hot bits clean and the fuel system, injectors etc running ok is to use a good cleaner. Most manufacturers will not advise you to use anything...because they don't want owners overdosing their engines or just putting any old thing in. But the service departments will often put a dose in for you or advise you to use it. Diesel injectors in particular get very dirty and need to be cleaned regularly. I speak as an ex techy.

Iuse millers sport 4 in my octy tdi every fill up and have found it to be very good:thumbup:. Even with my tuning box turned up to max, she still only kicks out a tiny bit of black smoke when i give it beans:).I used redex when i first got the car ,but tbh, never noticed any difference, but the millers defo works on my car:D

All I can say is that when they tested these things on a TV program (I think it was fifth gear) they found they were no use at all and some even reduced power and economy!

Can't remember how scientific these tests were mind.

Used correctly...and not too often, fuel system & injector cleaners work amazingly well. It has long been established in the trade and by manufacturers that these things are needed and should be used at regular intervals to maintain performance. If not used, the fuel system and injectors simply start to clog up with gum and a thick brown sticky carbon caused by additives in the fuel and the massive heat generated during running. In fact, clogging up can become so bad that the injectors will need replacing rather than cleaning if you do not use an additional cleaning agent once and a while.

Cleaning additives already in the fuel will only do so much. And...if you use supermarket petrol or diesel they only use secondary cleaning detergents in it which are next to useless so Ford and Honda have determined. There have been many articles in the monthly's about this very thing over the last couple of years.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the motoring tv programs...they don't let the facts get in the way of a good story!

My own fuel injected motorcycle needs a good dose of injector cleaner every year. I have even dyno'ed my machine before and after dosing with Millers injector cleaner (petrol in this instance of course). The dyno showed a terrific difference in power output of some 6 extra bhp after dosing (my bike is a 1400cc monster!). Thats much more power than can be accounted for by just temp, pressure and humidity changes. It was noticeable when riding too. It's up to you if you give it a go or not but at some point a techy at service is going to put it in your car with or without your knowledge to make sure it runs ok. Some charge for it, some don't.

I used millers sport 4 in my mapped fabia vRS with no problems and seemed to give a tiny increase in power but no really noticeable!

I use Millers Powersport 4 and would recommend it. I run it on each tank and I can notice when I'm not able to use it before fill-ups.

I've found it cuts down on smoke under load and helps engine smoothness generally, particularly from cold and at tickover.

Redex is about as useful as maple syrup. Do a search.

is millers available for petrol engiones too?

They do a different set of additives for petrol engines including an injector cleaner

anyone tried the petrol version of it then?

I used in on a friends car with single point injection and it didn't do any harm plus she seems to think it pulled more cleanly and seemed to go further on a tank of fuel.

Not scientific, but about as good as you'll get i think. It was a one shot thing IIRC.

There are other brands that work too though I believe they are more of the put a bottle in every 5k miles type.

i have noticed lots of different sorts claiming various stuff in halfrauds, an octane increaser, a nos thing you pour into your fuel that is basically a octane booster, redex, the stp stuff and many other unheard of brands.

SMS, yea...I've used Millers for petrol engines in my motorcycle. I have also used it in many diesel engines. It is supposed to be one of the very best and we used Millers in the trade all the time. Further, I noticed recently when I put my diesel transit into the garage for servicing, all the techies had Miller's diesel injector cleaner in their kit on their workbenches and indeed one of them put a good dose into my transit. He said all vehicles get it put in on every service...new or old. It's a necessity. Incidentally, I wasn't charged for it either!

Redex works on my 48 year old tractor  (how do I know it works.....It starts) not sure I would put it in my car though.

Millers should be OK
