Snapped bolt in suspension strut - LOL

Featured Replies

Yes, and I'll leave this parting shot too: Do you think your employers would be happy for you to advertise your association with them given all the above - especially as they are known to trawl Brisky for evidence of various things...

When have I mentioned my employer?

So jasc1988, myself and lewisgraham. We're all STUPID!!! Silly boys

yeah thats what im thinking ..... some people need to take there heads out of the "law" book

With a bolt sheared in the strut top, the strut will now flex at the flitch and if a strut brace is fitted this will put the remaining bolt under even more stress.

Would you condone driving with 2 wheel bolts removed from a wheel?

The 'law book' has feck all to do with it, its down to maintaining your vehicle to a roadworthy condition.

As for

Dont worry your little self. My car will never fail a MOT....

Its called having mates in the right places.

Telling you you have a blown bulb and to replace it ASAP is one thing, but to never fail your car, be it for a mate or not is just irresponsible :thumbdwn:.

Your lucky the bolt sheared TBH and not the captive nut spinning in the top mount which is a pain in the ars3,

Strut Top Mount - 6Q0412331B - Retail = £10.62+VAT Each

Top Mount Bearing - 6N0412249C - Retail = £9.50+VAT Each

AHh i dont think its snapped, just turning

LOL

So how do i fix it?? :D

Im the OP and i dont intent to drive with two just to clarify

Iv got nothing wrong with what people are saying as it's exactly true..... !

It's just how people on here are preaching to you when at the end of the day the guy didn't say he was driving the car did he and look how severl folk jump up with the whole "law book" about everything to do with the strut and mot's etc

Who cares........no-one wants to read your petty argument's

I drilled through the top as it was one of the bolts attaching my strutbrace so wasnt too worried about drilling into the car with the added thickness.

But theoretically if you drop the strut out and get a set of mole grips onto the offending captive nut, sometimes two pairs of hands help, then you will be able to turn it normally with someone below giving you resistance.

Is the nut turning? (it should be welded onto the strut top mount - under the wheel arch) if it is then all you need to do is to put a socket or mole grips on the nut so you can tighten the bolt up fully (then get it welded if/when the strut has to come off in the future)

Can i ask if you have the seat ibiza strut brace fitted to your car?

The Strut top mount is made of rubber and the captive nut is set into it during the moulding process.

Haha cheers pal. Seems people love to jump on here, some more than others, wont mention names

I doubt its a coidincidence that all the people it has happened to have a seat strut brace.

I also found mine to be a bit of a pig to fit and to remove, it doesnt really stretch far enough and one bolt needs to put in at a slight angle - increasing the chance of it crossthreading

I had one on, just taken it off about 30mins ago

Can't say I had any problems with mine. Needed a bit of convincing to go on, but no extra strain appeared to be put on the bolts.

Lol. It must have been my "strong hand" - jeremy my arms come off

mines went on without breaking bolts although it was tight but i'd be worried if it wasn't.

My seat ibiza strut brace twisted and bend one of my top mount nuts as we found out when fitting my coilovers at the TTshop so had to replace them with new ones. The holes on the ibiza sturt brace dont quite line up we had to elongate them slightly to stop this happening again.

You a car designer/engineer working for skoda?

I'm an engineer, that's what the letters after my name say and I've studied the basics of car design, however that is totally irrelevant.

Common sense says that if Skoda could have manufactured the car with 2 bolts instead of 3 at a cost saving of 10p a car they would have done, as over a production run of 1 million cars they would save £100,000.

I had a strut brace fitted yes and i'd say it affected it as the brace wasnt the best fit :)

Maybe not a useful comment at this point, but I think that you should find that the captive nut is riveted on to the steel collar within the mount and not bonded in with the rubber - either way the top mount needs replacing eventually - I'll bet it's a buggar to get hold off while you tighten the bolt.
