Turbo noise

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just want to try put my mind at rest and see what you guys think about a noise i've only noticed today. When i accelerated hard in third today from about 1700-2000rpm i noticed a whir from what i believe was the turbo. I immediately let off to investigate and it happens every time as the car seems to boost up to this degree (i'm probably not your normal VRS driver as i don't normally boot it, today's exception was to get past a tractor :) ). This noise is not the 'normal' hiss from the boot pipes and it only happens when above 70% pressure is applied to the accelerator, I only seem to be able to hear this with the windows down so its not that loud but its audible over the normal engine/turbo noise.

Is this anything that i should be worried about or can you provide possible fixes?

Thanks,

Mike.

Sounds fairly normal to be honest mate.

Thanks, glad to know that someone considers this normal, its my first turbo diesel and if you read these forums too much they can make you paranoid! :)

Mike.

Mine whistles quite loud when you boot it, but there is also a sort of a 'shoop' noise for about 1 second then it's gone. Now it only does it when you really boot it, not under normal operation, regular as the morning.

It sound like a valve or something moving in quickly as you have asked for 'max power'.

I hear mine when the windows are shut, try it with the wireless off and see.....where it is safe to do so.

Edit: could it be the actuator moving the vanes on the turbo by any chance??/ a tech with the knowledge of the pro that is Lummox may be able to help??

I wouldnt boot it from as low as 1700 mate, youll knacker your clutch

sound normal matey

Never heard of that before at them revs, mine will pull like a train from under 1700 onwards and doesn't slip,

Mine is always somewhere between 1500 and 2000rpm when driving normally.

I have had it since new and when I put me foot down below 1800 as this is where the turbo will spool.

1500rpm or below would be a no no for a lungfull or you will do your DMF in over time, but by the time you change, you won't be down that low anyway.

I would have thought that VW would have tested these components together to make sure they have the correct clutches to cope with the torque in these engines.

DMF reliability.......another thread....

Yep, mine too, and has for 30,000 miles. A bit of a whooshy sound.

Yup, done it since new, now done 70k and still doing it, so it can't be broke???

Woosh is good especially with a full stainless like mine.

If you let your car idle for a while the turbo will spool up and sound like a dyson has just been turned on haha

Haha yeah mine when im putting my foot down sounds like a hoover.

Its awesome... but non deisel drivers dont understand.!!!
