vRS CR Vs PD?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm new to the site and asked in the say hello section if anyone drove a vRS TDi!? What a numpty i am!-i didnt realise how big the membership was! Anyhoo...after having a good read through the site my arm is twisted and i'm off to view a '07 MkII Octy vRS TDi next week which i will more than likely take away with me :D

One thing i couldn't see here was whats the main difference between the CR engine and the PD170? I resume mine will be a PD? Also anything else i should be looking out for when inspecting the car? (23K mile MKII PD170)

Thanks in advance:thumbup:

Hi there are several recent threads on this on the Octy 2 section. Suggest you do a search. I'm afraid I can't explain the technical difference between PD (Pumpe Duse) and CR (common rail) in a knowledgable way, but the main differences as most people experience them is that the PD tends to deliver a big kick of power in a narrower rev range whereas the CR delivers power more consistently over a wider range (which people prefer seems to be down to individual taste), and is generally thought to be a bit more refined. The CR was introduced only in the last few weeks, so all used models with perhaps the exception of a demonstrator, will be PDs. I don't think you'd be disappointed with a PD VRS.

Having owned a TDi vRS for nearly a year and test driven a VW with the CR engine I have to say while I love my current vRS I would be very tempted to change it for the CR one. It is smoother and more refined. Also said to be more economical.

The CR is more economical and lower on emmissons a vRS 170CR is only £120 a year to tax.

Are they both as mappable?

I don't see why the CR-TDi wouldn't be mappable. My car (engine is an Alfa JTDm rebadged as Vauxhall) is only 1910cc, has a generic map blown on to it, and came up from 150PS/230lb-ft to the figures you see in my signature. I've no reason to expect the CR-TDi wouldn't be good to 220hp.

I don't think so either! :D

I'm still just worried about fuel economy. I do clock up the miles (my current MKI Octy is a '04 with 125K!!) but i'm just so tempted by the vRS! I'll take a test drive this week anyway and see? Yeah-like having 170 bhp after only having 90 for the last 4 years is gonna put me off
