Brake fluid change - 2 years or 20k miles..?

Featured Replies

Need to get my 20k mile service booked up pretty soon. Car has basically done 20k miles in 18 months (first service: 10k at 9 months).

Trying to decide whether the brake fluid should be done at 20k or 2 years - have read conflicting advice on here and forgot to check the service manual before I left for work today :o

So do I,

a) get it done at 18 months and 20k

B) get it done at 24 months (6 months away) and ~26k

c) get it done at 27 months and 30k

any combination of the above :)

Many thanks!

I think it's two years rather than xx000 miles for the brake fluid IIRC...

I think its whichever is sooner tbh

Also depends on driving style.

It's two years, so 27 months is as near as..

Save a few bob. As for miles; mine had 60K on at two years (so you're still running in ;-) and apart from checking and cleaning it's the only work that's been done to the brakes - still original pads at 99K.

Thanks for the replies. Spoke to the dealer a few minutes ago and they said its at two years, regardless of mileage. So I'll either get it specially done at 2 years, or wait til the 30k service - afterall who needs brakes anyway...

Yeah, the last thing you want is to put some super-duper DOT5 stuff in when you have your brakes done, only for your next service to come up a few weeks later and Skoda to replace it with boggo DOT4 stuff... :(

Not that that happened to me or anything ( ), I'm just theorising... :sofahide:

Whats the difference between DOTs 4 and 5

I'd just save time and get it done at your 24K service - I was a bit grumpy when my VW dealer changed the brake fluid on my wife's Polo at its first (variable) service - but it saved me a job and gave my Gunson's Easybleed a holiday!

DOT 5 is silicone based, you cant mix with DOT4 and cant be used on DOT4 cars without modification.

Wait until the 30,000 service. It's only 3 months over for pity's sake.

Anyway,brakes are for gays....
