Is my petrol safe

Featured Replies

in the last few weeks i've been reading about fuel being stolen from cars either from drilling a hole in the petrol tank or putting a pipe down the filler cap.

i know it's impossible stopping people from drilling into the tank but is my petrol cap secure enough to stop louts from stealing my petrol ?

thanks

I think you have answered your own question. It is impossible to stop people being able to steal your fuel, different devices and locks only change how difficult it is to get at.

could the petrol flap be forced open ? is there a device i could fit ?

Whilst you are at it, you'd better be worried about the gypos sawing your cat off for the platinum.

You could rig it so a spark appears 30 to 60 secs of any interference bye bye boys you should have gone to the garage like the rest of us have to do, and bought some maybe

Speaking with knowledge of the vRS only (fuel flap is opened from inside the car) then yes, you would be able to force it open/break it off. You can get locking fuel caps to use under that, but should the perpetrator be determined enough they will get through that as well.

Sometimes if you put to high a level of security then your car can end up more damaged while they attempt to get at the fuel through multiple measures compared to where they just have to get through a single security measure.

HTH

Only keep a fiver of fuel in your car at any one time.

i always have half a tank full of petrol in case of petrol strikes (i'm very cautious lol)

Saw a Honda on the motorway the other day, petrol flap had been crowbarred open, left a huge dent down the rear wing towards the lights about a foot long.

Well that should be enough to about double the value of the vehicle so the saying goes.....

Ross, that would just about get me to work and back :)

IMHO you cant worry yourself too much with this mate, the cap is lockable as required by the MOT, if you are targeted and your car is locked its just bad luck unless you have intelligence to the contrary. If you let this worry you try not to think about leaving the TV on standby causing fires, will i get hit by a bus tomorrow or is my deoderant killing the ozone.

BMW's seem to be fav, as have higher platinum rates or sommat.

slightly off topic but how much is a cat making for scrap value in england? they are upto 70 quid in northern ireland.

Couple of hundred the news said.

Lexus 4x4 (in fact any 4x4), they're stealing the whole exhaust system because its easily done. Black market is double the replacement value.

Which begs the question, why not get one from kwikfit, and flog on the black market?

You know, since i've had my Bohemia... its really annoying as i keep forgetting to lock the fuel cap again! because its lot released open from inside the cabin:( its annoying i've left it for days unlocked! but ill get into the habbit of it soon i hope!

They're gonna be a bunch of confused pikeys trying to nick mine. :D

It might get me to work and back on a good day.

Give it another year or so and you'll need a fiver's worth of fuel just to get off your driveway :thumbdwn:

So far it is just diesel being stolen or being reported as stolen that I have read about.

Farms and stuff being targetted and people have been attacked and one person died I think.

news here not sure if anyones been charged for this yet or not.

can any standard locakable filling cap fit any car say fabia or octy or have you got to order for that particular car?

other than it needing a key, it looks the same as any other fuel cap:)

i guess you'd need a spare key just for the cap though. wich could end up bein a pain. the flap locks itself anyway:) and your alarm would be triggered.

Locking caps wont stop them, they just smash the lock out of them, had it done a couple of times in the truck - but when the fuel tanks (x2) are 500L each there is a bit of an incentive for the thieving scumbags.
