Felicia 1.4-16v engine transplant

right folks... mini update. i've now done exactly 10,000 miles since fitting the 1.6 16v engine and it's still going strong, in a moment of madness i decided to take off the polo gti intake manifold and refit the older type from the AFH engine, and to my great surprise it actually runs better with it on, much more torque lower down in the rev range (due to the smaller ports i guess)..

  • felicia 1.6 belhouse adaptor plate goes on first

  • Ok so i thought id have a blast at this conversion and started it the other week, i think the main issue has been lack of space as im doing it in a single garage! So far it hasnt actually been too ba

  • Thanks , hopefully have it together sunday

Ive just killed the aee in my autotester so im going to lob an afh in, do you have any diagrams/drawings for the engine mount?

  • Author

yes :giggle:

Any chance I can get a copy? need to make one up for mine just picking the engine up tonight, also do you use the felly hoses or the polos? Think I've grasped the rest from the thread.

  • Author

if yours is a 1.6 then you have everything you need already, the hoses are the felicia ones, the thermostat housing is identical on the 8v and 16v engine so there's no issues re-using all of them...

i have a wiring loom here too if you need it, it has the additional egr valve plug...

i'm sure you will understand that i'm reluctant to give out my hard-earned technical drawings but i can supply you an engine mount ready to fit in a colour of your choice if that's any help? i'll have to get on the blower to my mate neil to find out what it will cost to run off another batch of parts

no worries just wanted to save time, rather than a few hours mocking up as i need it in and done for an event next week. I regularly fab stuff at work so like to use my own fabbed parts (absolutely no offence intended).

Im going to run mine with the egr valve deleted i think.

Reason i ask is a mate offered me some polo silicon hoses ubercheap

do you have a waterjetting machine or a laser cutter? i can send you an autocad dxf file of the 3 component parts

I don't but the man accross the industrial estate has. if you can email them to [email protected] thatd be awesome

Did AFH have an air-con variant?

  • Author

yes, the engine that was in mine was an aircon model, the ecu is specific to the aircon model too, there are a few extra pins which are unused on the non-a/c version which relate to compressor readiness etc

Cool! (No pun intended)

Would it all fit into a Felly engine bay with the "usual" amount of work - or would it require major work?

(If I end up having to have 'modded' insurance, might as well look at going all the way ;) )

  • Author

has yours got aircon already?

Other than the windows and opening the back out? ;)

No, don't even think it was an option on the Funs :(

My 1.6AEE engine, in my poor Fun has just started drinking oil, so I'm looking at a recon. After reading this thread, I'm now thinking about a transplant. Correct me if I'm wrong, what I need is:

1off 6n AFH Polo engine and wiring loom &

1off Super Cool TeflonTom Engine Bracket.

Do I need the ECU, or can the Felicia ECU be remapped?

Do I need an adapter for the bell housing?

Can I add air-cond? Was air-cond. an option for the Felicia?

Any thing else I might need?

All you will need is the polo 16v engine and the polo 16v ecu in your case, becuse yours is a 1.6 you have the vast majority of the bit you need already... I'd forget the aircon idea too, it's too much of a ball ache to fit and the donor parts you need are rare as rocking horse ****

Thanks,

Now to source a 6n motor...

Thanks for the tip about the aircon. Coming from Oz, I miss my air-con and cruise-control.

Will the fun immo system work with the 16v ecu?

Just been on vagcat looking for seat 1.4 16v afh for plastic cover set, struggling to find one designated afh, any help appreciated.

You're looking into wrong place then... Look at seat Ibiza, 1998 6k, engine and clutch, toothed gelt covers 16v... Ignore what the pictures look like on etka/vagcat they are just a rough guide the illUstration is a polo one ( polo has engine mount in different place) but they are the correct parts numbers for tHe seat version.

Think I've found my low mileage AFH engine, complete with a Seat Cordoba car. (Need to confirm scrapage costs, etc) Just wondering if I can use the gearbox? My Fun's gearbox doesn't inspire confidence.

I don't know if it's linkages or not, it's like stirring soup and the stick fierce rattles in 4th. I seam to remember my brother's Fiat 124 Coupe (1974) had a similar problem in most gears and was a problem with 'weak gates' or something. I really don't know.

  • Author

You could use the vw gearbox but it would mean a whole lot more work, you are better off fixing you existing one.

universal on gearlinkage often develops play--kit to fix is about £20. Strength of felly box itself has surprised me.
