1.4 using water !!!!!

Featured Replies

hi hope someone can help me out here ,

the wifes fabia is losing/using water from the expansion tank/system,

about every 2 weeks the low water /temp light comes on and buzz`s in the car , when i check the level its about 10mm under the min mark on the bottle , so i top it up and all`s ok for another 2 weeks ish .

ive checked all the hoses and rad for leaks but theres nothing to see.

and the oil is fine ,

any suggestions would be helpfull .

cheers in advance

I'd check your water pump. Sometimes the only warning of a water pump leak is coloured liquid dripping from underneath the car. A slow leak from the water pump would cause the sort of loss you describe and you would see little if the water pump is hidden behind a cover or other components.

How old is the car?

the car is a 2001 , only done 28k,

my other thought is the heater matrix ?

Try Fabia I and not FabiaII we are not use to faults here yet.

2090

Mine does this, it's the gasket on the water pump that caused mine. Bascially it's blown out the side of the pump.

I ad a similar problem in a Fiat Uno I owned many years ago. In my case it was the hea gasket that had blown and was leaking water into the engine cylinders. Eventually diagnised it because the car would run very rough for a could of minutes after it hadbe left parked overnight.

same problem as i had on a mk 3 its the gasket. if it all goes in a 30 mile drive then the water pump is shot too.

Check the radiator fan thermo switch, just above the bottom radiator hose. They very often leak and usually just require tightening. Look for pink coolant stains, as the water will often evaporate before it gets a chance to drip.

Is it an MPi? Does it have a Temac headgasket fitted if it is?

Had a similar problem on the wife's MPI, running my hand under the rad under the bottom hose and found it was damp. As Fordfan said it was the seal around the temp sensor that was causing the problem. If you can't find the leak have the system pressure tested. My brothers Vauxhall van had a water loss problem & his mechanic added something to the coolant which changed the colour of the coolant indicating the head gasket had failed. I'm told that early 1.4 MPI's did suffer coolant problems. Hope yours is just a weep around the sensor.

is there much water/steam coming out of the exhaust?

thanks for all your comments , had it up on the jacks today and had a good look underneath around the rad area and found that the thermo switch is leaking , tried to nip it up but its a bugger to get to !, gunna get a new seal for it then pop it up on the ramp and repace it ,

thanks again to you all

cheers kev
