VRS Jammed in second gear

Featured Replies

After covering only 500 miles in my new VRS TFSI the gears jammed in second as I was turning a corner today. After a quarter mile I managed to change gear but the change now seems notchy and there's some resistance, certainly not the silky smooth change it was. I'm going to get it checked out at the dealer on Monday but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar with the new VRS? :(

Not on a Skoda, but had the same on a Clio. Needed a new 'box.

Well that sounds very encouraging, thanks I feel so much better now.:(

Well, if you are feeling that sensitive, here's a story from the other extreme.

I had a 1970 Holden V8 with "three on the tree" (3 speed manual, column gear change mechanism). If I tried to change from 1st to 2nd quickly the linkages would jam up. Short term solution was to pop the bonnet and jiggle the linkages where they emerged from the column. Long term solution was to replace two $2.50 rubber bushes.

Your problem will probably fall somewhere in the range between tangoorange and my experiences (and if I was a betting man I would put $$$ on a fault with the linkages - maybe something as simple as a loose adjusting nut or something similar).

i've got exactly the same problem with mine, dealers are going to have the gear box out and strip it down when i come back off holiday. its been in already once and they couldnt find anything obvious

You can manage to pop it out of gear easily if you pull the stick while releasing the gas pedal. That is, provided the gear stick linkage still works. You can even upshift clutchless with relatively little practice.

Took it out last night for a test run and it was a little stiff but changed gear ok. Took it out today and it was perfectly ok - back to normal.:)

Dan the V8Man - when you find out what the dealers think the cause may be on yours I'd appreciate if you'd let me know. If it's likely to be a reoccuring incident then I want to get it sorted asap. If I can give the dealers a clue it might save them time.

Driving from Cardiff to Bolton then Liverpool on Tuesday, Bristol on Thursday and Oxford at the end of the week - hopefully won't find myself stuck at the side of the road anywhere...!

Cheers:thumbup:

I'd still get it checked out matey...

well earlier today i couldnt get mine into reverse!! out of the blue!

i can upshift and downshift (with a blip of the throttle) quite easily without the clutch but it still feels notchy as hell

tangoorange: will let you know as soon as i do, but wont be untill next month at the earliest as im going on holiday

I've never had the guts to try and practice my downshifts because I'm probably too chicken, but upshifts work fine.

I imagine the more torque you have, the beefier the gears you need to move with the engine still attached to the box. Driving an E39 M5 regularly, with the clutch, I had a sour leg after half a day.

Shift into 1st, then try again, or return to neutral, release clutch and try again. Reverse is so demultiplied on most recent cars that the teeth on the gears are too fine, and you occasionally can't put it in gear. They will also grind at even the slightest tendency of lurching forward or backward.

My box has started to feel a but notchy also. Its vRS TDI with 33K on it. Is it a common problem ?

From driving a few they all, IMHO, get a little bit knotchy, but shouldn't get hard to get into gear.

Dan The V8Man: Cheers for that and have a good holiday, hopefully somewhere with some sun.

Update: Just completed 8 1/2 hours of driving (550 miles) yesterday and everything perfect. Huge amount of gearchanges as even motorways were permanent stop start due to extreme weather. Fingers crossed it was just a one-off.

The car is a real flyer...! :)

Latest Update: I've now completed over 2,500 more miles and absolutely no sign of the problem again, the gearchange is perfect in all gears. It seems to have been a one-off gremlin that's cleared itself.:)
