Hi, I've been thinking of buying an octavia, but which one???

I currently have an x type jag auto, which I've had for 2 years or more, I like it but it's time for a change, but as my useage is mainly commuting in town traffic 8 miles each way, with mostly 40mph limits, but I/we do like to do a european trip once a year, is it foolish of me to go with my heart and go for a VRS dsg or go with my head which says diesel 1.9 pd dsg?? i do like autos but for better fuel economy I could go with a manual if it makes a big enough difference,

any replies and help gratefully received.

I have a 10 mile drive each way to work and have had 2 VRSs. So I say go with your heart. Nothing worse than having a car you do not enjoy driving. With only doing so few mile fuel ecomony will not be too much of an issue for you I would suspect. Then on the weekends you can take it out on too a few quicker roads for more fun. I have the tdi vrs at moment and would recommend it if you would like to saty with diesel but alho depends what you are looking for. Why not test drive the vrs (both petrol and diesel) and the 1.9 and see which you prefer. Happy choosing

Hi I have had 3 1.9tdi Octavia's all manual and all have returned good mpg

My latest is a Octavia 11 1.9 TDI DSG on 54 plate which I have now had for 10mths with good mpg

Just a note to say that a vRS TD may not be suitable for you cos of the DPF. They need a good old boot now and again to regenerate. You doing the daily commute may get it rather full and may not get chance to get blown off or regenerated. That of course would give you an excuse to get out at the weekend and give it a blast and get a good smile on your face!!

Your low miles may mean a petrol vRS would be better though.

L&K's are a very good spec, a 1.9 should do 50+ mpg without even trying whereas a vRS tdi will do 42 normally and 55/60 if very carefull. The dsg may take some of that away though.

L&K DSG 140bhp pdi every time. More refined and more comfort that the vrs.

I am under the impression that dsg and manuel have identical mpg.

Having now owned (4) 1.9tdi 110bhp Octavia's 3 manual and my current auto My first was a new x reg all other secondhand my latest being the auto dsg which other than testing the gearbox function I drive on auto I have found little difference in the mpg between manual and auto using all on various types of journey I now use cruise control as much as possible which I believe also helps on mpg

I doubt my Granny would be able to get the mpg up to that sort of figure (even if she were still alive and had a driving license)

42 as an average is about right (though I've got mine upto 42.7 with the higher cost of diesel lately) but anything significantly beyond that requires a good number of helium balloons to be attached to your right foot!!:balloons:

I find cruise destroys my mpg, the system isn't intelligent enough, for example if you were driving with the cruise off and approach an incline, I would gently accelerate gently beforehand to climb the incline, however with the cruise control on, when you hit the incline, the system senses this and accelerates (quite abruptly), reducing the mpg.

I agree - We have a PD140 Leon which has covered 10k miles since about march time and it really struggles to achieve much more than low 40's

If you want absolute economy then the only option is the 1.9Tdi.

That's a good point given your daily commute.

A 1.8TSI might fit the bill quite nicely, providing a fair turn of speed with better fuel economy than a vRS TFSI (well according to the brochure anyway - real world consumption figures can, of course, vary quite widely).
