Suspension lowering question?

Featured Replies

Hello chaps,

Wondered if anyone can give me a few pointers. I'm looking to lower my Superb by around 30-40mm. I figured it was just a case switching the springs and maybe wheel alignment ... however having scanned around the forum I ended up a little confused ....... so essentially I guess I'm looking for other people's experineces.

Eibachs lower by 30mm right? They're around £130 too right?

KW's lower by 40mm which is preferable .... but do I also need new shocks or anything else with them? Also where is a good place to buy for a good price. What is that price too! :)

Once I get the suspension lowered a bit I'll throw up a project diary or just post pics. Already have alloys on it and other than the ride height (looks like a tractor right now) I'm fairly happy.

Any advice welcome, where to buy and what would be needed especially.

Cheers

Basically you have 3 options with increasing price and effectiveness.

1) Cut a couple of coils of your existing springs to shorten them (A bad idea but very cheap)

2) Lowering springs only (bit dearer, around £150)

3) Coilover adjustable suspension (ride height adjustable and alot better kit)

I have the ride height adjustable V-Maxx kit which cost me £300 and worth every penny. Alot of people go for KW vairant 1,2 or 3 for around £600 for variant 1. I wouldn't recommend the spring only as the Superb is a big car and you'll be putting the dampers under consatnt load and they will fail after a while. In the end, you get what you pay for.

Ok. Cheers for the reply. I wasn't looking to spend £600 to be fair, just can't afford it right now.

I saw a fair few people had lowered the springs only, didn't really think too much it'd be riding on the shocks but I suppose it makes sense. Wonder if anyone else is running just on springs and if they've had probs with the shocks.

Otherwise I may end up just saving pennies I guess.

I have the KW Variant 1 Coilovers and I am very happy with them, but as your leaning to the springs set up I would suggest that Bluefox on here gives you his opinion as he has the KW springs on his Superb and could comment on the ride..............

4th option is to install a complete kit of springs and matching shocks like Eibach Pro-System. I have those in my -05 Comfort. Some pics here.

Cheers for the replies gents. I've opted for Eibach's to drop the car by 30mm for now. It's not a huge drop and 40mm would look better, but to be frank 40mm would affect the ride quality too much. The Eibachs are designed to work with standard shocks and I was never going for that slammed look anyhow.

At least that's what I'm telling myself, I suspect the truth is that I'm too pikey to shell out for shocks and springs for a while.

I just put on my car KW's 30/30 set (complete kit of springs and matching shocks).

From front it dropped 40mm and rear 16mm :rolleyes:.

Here's couple of pictures:

Ride became much better and it's not too hard. Even wife like's it. And car isn't too low so there's no problems driving on gravel or over speed pumps.

I do indeed.

Allclowns, in response to your PM I will check my history for what springs I fitted, but they were definitely -40mm.

For the record - they're excellent springs. Almost impossible to distinguish from standard in terms of ride, and the handling's improved no end.

I would recommend the KW's - but I haven't tried the Eibach springs (on a Superb) so it's hard to compare. I'd be interested to know what yours is like after the Eibach's, if that's where you go.

Yeah well I went for the Eibach's on the advice from a VW Mastertech friend of mine. I'd preferred to have gone for the KW's with the 40mm drop but I'll be honest, I was a little worried the ride quality would be lessened unless I also shelled out extra money for uprated shocks too.

So essentially I reckoned on the Eibach's ... and if they didn't give me enough drop I could always sell them on and fit the KW's at a later time.

You want to know something incredibly sad, I took a photo of the car, measured the wheel height and then tried like mad to remember trigonometry from school days to figure out how many pixels I'd have to photoshop the image to resemble a 30mm drop (for Eibachs) and a 40mm drop (for KWs). To my shame, even as I was photoshopping with calculator in hand I KNEW just how sad I was ..... but still didn't stop. The KW's do look better in my opinion but the Eibach's were a comprimise. We'll just see how they turn out.

Planning to get them on sometime in the next week, will post up what the ride quality is like and a few pics too.

Cheers for the reply.

I think you wont't be disappointed with Eibach .

In my case nose diving when braking and nose going up in acceleration was reduced dramatically. The roll was also reduced but not as much as pitch. This is most likely 'cause Superb is relatively heavy car and just replacing springs is not enough. Changing stabilizer bar also might do the trick. In fact I've been looking for one for Superb but there seems to be none available, help anyone?

Reminder: Just make sure you order the correct set of springs for your car 'cause there are two versions available depending your engine (=front axel weigth) size. :)

THX for tip . She told they have installed B5 Passat's Neuspeed rear bar in Primey's car earlier this year. It was a bolt-on job. About the front bar she wasn't sure if it fits as is. However, after reading the discussion it seems that adding the rear one will give the most and easiest benefit.

I've just checked, the invoice I got from work doesn't have the KW part number on it and the photos I took haven't either. It was on the old computer system as well so I couldn't find the original purchase order.

Sorry :(

Hi

if you want any more help , we deal with KW , Wietec and also Eibach

So just give me a shout

That is what I am here for ;)

Sarah

Hmmm I'm interested to see how these look as we are going to do shreds car soon and haven't quite got the funds for the full suspension set up.

If we are to lower it will it have any effect when towing a car trailer??

Cheers

I would say if you lowered it a lot and then towed a trailer you might be running on the bump stops, which obviously isn't good.

That said, a -30 or -40mm drop should be okay on a car the size of the Superb.

Don't quote me on that though :D

I've given a thought about this rear ARB in Superb. Why it would give better driving characteristics since Superb has rigid rear axle (U-shaped beam). Doesn't that work also as an ARB by itself? Facts & comments, please.

There's a conversation about this in the Maintanance and Performance forum here, and a historical one in the Group Buys forum here - both of which are discussing the Fabia I VRS anti-roll bar.

The rear of this vehicle is a "solid rear axle" in a similar way as the Superb, at least in respect to your query.

:+1: for the comments on there; it's all the same in principle.

Hello chaps,

Ok I promised some pics once I got the car done. I'm reasonably happy with it so far. At some point I may throw some spacers on the wheels to give it that more muscular bulldog type of look. Anyone used these before, if so what were the results like?

As it stands I got some 17'' Audi S-line alloys on it and dropped the suspension by 30mm front and rear with a set of Eibach's. Forgive the basic review from this point onwards but a few people have asked what changes it made.

Essentially from a looks point of view the car sits better in my opinion. The Superb always looked like a tractor on standard ride height. I didn't want it dropped too much because I didn't want it to look like it had been lowered, just to look more natural ... if that makes sense. As from a ride quality point of view, it's stiffer. You do feel a little more of the road through your **** whilst driving but nothing too harsh. It's not like it's a rough ride or anything. The main benefit is around town. I can feel more what the car is doing with the grip it has and it has more "chuckability" around corners. It feel more planted on the road and the stiffness given by the new springs means more tyre is in contact with the tarmac, hence a more planted stance and increased grip around town.

So yeah, I'm happy. I doubt I'll do much else to the car. To me it looks ok. It wont turn as many heads as some of the Superb's on here but I really wasn't going for that. Just wanted it to sit a little better.

Anyhow on with the show.

BEFORE: Standard suspension and 16'' steels.

After: Alloys and 30mm drop on springs. Also decluttered the badging at the rear.

I have to admit I like the way the front sits a little lower too. I reckon the Superb is actually styled better than the Passat or even the A4 if it weren't for the exaggerated ride height.

Cheers for the replies and I hope the photos help anyone else who might be looking to do the same. Comments welcome.

Looking good

That's a fine set of alloys you have there ;)

You got one installed in your Superb then?

You got one installed in your Superb then?

No, sadly I haven't got the cash. I have got one planned for the near future, however.

I was agreeing in the context of principle, I've no experience on how these things work on a Superb other than hearsay on this forum.

Looks well, that'll settle in nicely. I'd be interested to know how the Eibach's fare over time.

As for the alloys... it's a brave choice, but I think I like them!

Nice work, keep it up.

Brave choice on the wheels mate and it looks good.......

I run spacers on my motor and have never had any problems with them as long as you have hubcentric ones with the correct length wheel bolts......
