I've just bought a five-year-old Octavia Elegance TDi. It's my first non-Vauxhall car for 25 years. I used to work in a Vauxhall dealership, hence why I've always had them.

What sort of MPG does your car do, and what is to be reasonably expected? I've just been on holiday to Cornwall for two weeks, and it's averaged 45mpg, which included towing a trailer there and back, + about another 800 miles or so travelling around with two children in the back and a top box on the roof. I know some people claim they'll do 55mpg, 60mpg or more, but I do wonder if those are actually realistic. I did get the trip computer to show an average of 60mpg once in Cornwall, but that was light throttle everywhere, and a strict maximum of 50mph. I've already replaced the air flow sensor and coolant temp sensor. I had good reason to believe that both were faulty, and the car now goes like a rocket. In fact it's hard to drive it carefully 'cos it just wants to take off.

My old 1994 Astra 1.7DTL with 218,000 miles on the clock used to average 38-40mpg, and 42-45mpg on a long run but is a slug compared to the Octavia.

It has done 145,000 miles by one owner (not a taxi driver), but how exactly do you cover that mileage in five years? By doing long journeys on the motorway of course, and with a full service history there's no reason why the engine wouldn't be in excellent condition, unless of course someone who knows more about these than me knows differently.......

I have a five year old Tdi (just under 140k on the clock) and drive 35-45 minutes each way to work every day at the moment. mostly on a big A road but a bit of traffic either end (and sometimes in the middle!).

Brim to brim I get 50-55mpg out of it.(despite the trip computer claiming 60-70)

On a long run, driven carefully I reckon I could get well into the 60s and maybe even hit 70 if I really tried hard.

Only usually me in the car with no luggage tho, and I dont use the air con much.

I used to get 60+ all the time out of my 110 Elegance, running on variable service (better MPG).

No matter how hard i tried it never went below 50 MPG.

Mine averaged 53mpg on a full tank (indicated about 56) of normal driving and on long runs would get close to 60mpg.

That wasn't making any huge efforts to drive for economy , but when I did try it was possible to beat these figures easily enough.

From 50mpg commuting up to the low 60s on light throttle driving (fill to fill figures, the computer mpg figures are better), on a 110. That said I own neither a top box nor a trailer, never mind using both at once!

I get a genuine 57mpg on mixed roads taking it easy (30, 40, 50 and 70 zones) doing 45mile round trip each day, never had worse than 52mpg. Never yet had it on a decent run, but would expect 60mpg sticking to 70mph. car is the 1.9 tdi 90 bhpon 53 reg with 83K.

I can't get anywhere near that. 45/46mpg is where I am.....

Oh yeah, I've had low 60s from a hired 90, despite spending 2 hours in a traffic jam getting it out of Thiefrow and about 2 miles down the M25, and cruising at 70ish (again on fill to fill data).

i use to get 30-35mpg from my 1.6 astra, 35-40mpg from my rover 214 and i get around 35-40mpg usually from my octy2. last night i did manage to hit 49mpg on the 10 mile drive back from swmbo's which i was well impressed on (about 25mpg if you hard foot it). all these figures are for petrol.

my PD130 on my normal commute which is 32miles of M1 and dual carrigeway outside of rush hour returns me 46-50mpg I have seen 52mpg over a tank of diesel. I did a trip a couple of weeks ago to torquay with myself/Swmbo and 2 kids / large tent / food /clothing / roof box /table etc etc etc so alot of weight and a big box on the roof and did a fairly constant 70mph and the car returned 43mpg which I was very pleased with.

The PD130 is the most un-economical of the octavia diesels and all the above figures were worked out using the brim to brim method.

Don't forget, you are still new to the car and as such it will take you a little while to work out how to get the best out of it (performance & economy).

That notwithstanding, I got 63mpg out of my 130 estate on a Manchester to Crieff run last week, mainly m-way with the cruise set to 1800rpm.

It is marginally less economical than my last car, which was a Bora with the same engine.

I do usually drive like an elderly lady with time to spare, but I like the extra oomph of the 130 to be available if in a hurry, or carrying a lot of stuff.

That notwithstanding, mainly m-way with the cruise set to 1800rpm.

the extra cog (6th gear) is handy for motorway crusing but if your rpm was only sat at 1800rpm then that is why you were seeing higher mpg than myself.

Generally speaking though the pd130 isn't the most economical of the diesels.

I don't know I could stand a long m/way cruise at 54mph (nominal), but I'd expect 65 to 70 mpg (actual) from my 110 if I could do that for 200odd miles.

In my old (110) TDi about 63mpg on a long run cruising around 60-70 and about 45mpg in town.

im quite often on flat roads in 6th at 30mph which is about 1500rpm see quite good fuel returns too.:D:thumbup:
