Need to use my amp and sub!!!

Featured Replies

I know this question may have been answered indirectly by various other post on the forum but I wanted to start a thread which (hopefully) would answer the question I have..

I currently have the stream unit fitted in my VRS, I also have a 4 channel pheonix gold amp and a 12" JL sub sitting in my loft gathering dust! Reason for this as I am sure you know is that the stream unit doesnt have a line out.

What is the best way for me to go on this? Bearering in mind Stu fitted Maxidot and OEM BT which I dont want to lose so aftermarket double DIN are out of the question.

i would go for the rear speaker leads and make a feed off them to the amp afaik there isnt preouts on the stream.

Change the headunit.

does the amp have high level inputs?

iirc you can just run the standard rear speaker wires to the high input on the amp, then set the cross-overs to filter the bass :)

No high level inputs on the amp, only 0.8 - 4.5v peak to peak inputs. Would want to go that route tbh as it makes for very poor sound.

I know I need to change the headunit, but which one? Ideally I'd like the MFD3 (wouldn't we all ) but cant afford the 4 figure asking price alas!

I have lead1 at home somewhere if you want one. I bought it with the intention of fitting an amp and sub but my HU has since failed so it's no use to me now. PM me if your interested.

I have a spare line to RCA convertor so you can run RCA cables from a normal speaker channel.

If the price of a MFD3 is too scary then why not go the MFD2 route?

Better sounding than the Stream (IMHO of course) and already has line outs.

Might well be an option mate, as It will work with the canbus too  So I wont lose my BT that Stu installed.

How much can you pick them up for these days?

With me having a 4 channel amp, my plan would be to run hi-pass to the front doors and use two channels for the sub (this is ideal as the JL has twin voice coils :D ) Then disconnect the rear tweeters, replace with 6.5" coaxials - these would be fed via the headunit and the fader could be used to adjust the midrange balance. This way I would be able to use all my existing kit with minimal cost and get a pretty balanced sound...

What do you think peeps?

Some people have bought a very reasonably priced Columbus lately on eBay - Just a case of being lucky I think.
