Engine starts up and then dies.

Featured Replies

Hi.

Last week in the morning, I started up my car. It started on first 3 starter revs like it usually does, engine reved up and instantly after that it died. I didn't make much of it so I restarted the engine and carried on with my acitivites.

Yesterday, it was late, and I needed to go and pick up someone. I started the engine and the same thing happened: reved up and then died. The battery light came on but it does this all the time after I manage to kill the engine. So...today same thing happened. Twice!

Now I'm getting a bit worried.

I came here, went through some old threads and found a similar issue on some other cars. There was some talk about camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. To be honest my machine leaks a bit oil from crankshaft's first seal and I believe this has corroded either the sensor itself or wires because hot oil is not a very friendly environment for wires.

I made a thread to get your opinion on this and if you think the same I think, then how hard is it to fix this problem?

About that oil leak: I'm about to fix that aswell. I'm waiting for parts to change timing chain aswell. I was supposed to start working today but there were some delays and parts never came and they'll actually arrive on next Wednesday.

Anyways, it's a long and boring read but I hope you can help me here. And if not, thanks for trying anyways :)

PS: The car is 2002 Fabia with 1.4 MPi engine(8v).

Sounds like an immobilizer issue.

Fault code read would help.

I don't think I have an immo.

What can be done about that issue, if I happen to have an immobiliser?

And where/how/wtf can I read those fault codes?

You do have an immobilizer.

You need someone with VAG COM or a dealer to plug into the car.

Ok...I can go to dealer's but I can't guarantee the fault happens when I'm hooked up with those machines. And dealers tend to cash in every move they make. I'll just have to hope they won't move that much:rofl:

It will log a fault anyhow, have a look ont he VAG COM locator, might have a friendly Briskodian local to you who would have a look and at least give us a fault code to go on.

I'm afraid the nearest friendly Briskodian is in Espoo which is a long drive and a boatride away from me :)

But I found a guy in my town that does car diagnostics. I'll go check with him on Monday.

Does the immobiliser light come on when you turn the ignition on and then go out? Could be a dirty throttle body or dodgy coolant temperature sensor.

Yes. I believe I've noticed that light. I didn't know what that meant and didn't pay much attention to it.

Coolant sensor sometimes plays trick on me: the gauge sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Again, haven't paid much attention to that either.

Edit: Sorry, fordfan. I kinda misread your post.

To clarify: I have seen the immo light a few times. At time, I didn't know what that meant and didn't pay much attention to it. I can't answer to your question at the moment because it's raining like f*** outside and I don't want to get wet. But I will try to check this first tomorrow morning.

I'll now tell you something that will really make you LOL. My car has only done 38 600 kilometers ( yes, KM, not M ). It's 6 years old and it has driven almost nothing. LOL, right?

Where about are you based mate to see if anyone has VAGCOM to have a look for you?

You see this is the benifit of filling in your profile information ;)

A possible is the pickup coil for the immobiliser chip- it sits around the ignition lock.

This is what happens with an uncoded ignition key, so try another key just in case.

Like Lummox says, a code read is the best thing.

Err...I think I lost you on the word "you" :D I seriously don't get what you're trying to say.

And cjb: You too. That first line is impossible for me to decipher.

Me - You hadnt filled in your profile information, thus I didnt know where you were. Had I known you were abroad the offer of VAG COM wouldnt have been sugested.

cjb - Your car has an immobilizer. It works off a chip in the ignition key. When you put the key in the ignition a reader built around the ignition barrell picks up the chip and allows the car to start. If the signal isnt recieved then the car starts and cuts out.

Thank you for explaining.

Your most welcome.

Yep. I know- my experience of this was with the wife's Lupo. We have a key that a locksmiths cut but couldn't code to the immo chip. We had to get someone with a 5053 to do it. £90 , and the place that failed got dirt all over the pale yellow/grey seats.

[edit]

That wasn't directed at me, was it? D'oh.

I have had a few drinks

Sorry.

The car reads a chip in the key. If it cannot read it, it starts, then stops.

Is that any easier?

Ouch! I cleaned my ignition lock today with alcohol and cotton stick. It was very very dirty. After cleaning engine turned on fine. I also cleaned my keys though they were clean before. Maybe thats a temporary solution?

seems like a good solution.
