Boost Gauge Overreading?

Featured Replies

Any idea what would cause a boost gauge to ovveread?

Aside from the quality of the gauge itself

Running too much boost in the first place?

I think the quality thing is going be #1 though. :)

My car is not mapped - I know this for a fact - it ran 145bhp on the rollers.

Only engine mods are decat exhaust, CCV bypass, PD160 + Airfilter, EGR turned down.

However I have recently installed my boost gauge - The make is "Swoosh".

When flooring the pedal in 3rd and 4th gear the needle on the gauge peaks at 23psi, and holds at 20-22psi until just under 4,000rpm.

22 PSI is 1.5 BAR.

:( Confuzion.

1.5 bar is only about 0.1 / 0.15 of a bar over - That could just be a bit of overboost which is fairly natural. 20 psi is about stock boost :)

So a standard PD130 SHOULD be holding 20 psi of boost flat out in 3rd-4th gear?

boost leak. Especially if it's erratic/spikey.

Been there, done that, lol

Boost leak in the line somewhere you think?

Not noticing any power decrease or black smoke..

I'll get a video later on.

You can hear it rattle like a bag of marbles too lol

Before I replaced the OEM boost tubing, the OEM connectors were allowing a small amount of leakage.

The gauge was way off, reading 2.7 BAR or something. Not much smoke either.

When I changed the upper boost pipe for a DIY stainless steel effort, pressures were steady and max boost was what was expected.

Funny that, and I never figured out why it was doing that, but there you go.....

Also, Decat will make you boost higher, but your car will be ok.

It's not really spiking.

Its boosting to 22psi according to the gauge and holding there until just under the redline.

Thats booting it in 3rd and 4th gear.

Here's another thing to note.

I've removed my tuning box and upon driving it for the first time the other day the gauge is now peaking at 20psi when booting the car in 3rd or 4th gear, and holding at a steady 18-19psi.

It's also making far less of a noise than before when the box was fitted.

Any ideas?

All I know is that the box was overfuelling injector 4 beyond its capabilities

GRRRR!

After removing my tuning box the gauge seemed to be starting to work fine!

Stopped vibrating and started giving accurate readings!

Then tonight after 1/2 an hour drive the needle started sticking, first at 5psi at idle then 10psi at idle

DONT BUY SWOOSH
