Ran over a stone

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Last night I ran over a big stone in the middle of the road  Immediately pulled over the vehicle for an inspection. Noticed some damage near the front left lower arm (see pics). When I started the vehicle again, the engine sounded very different (from idle) and the turbo noise is not heard. At times it sounds like air is leaking. Any ideas?

I have not take the car to the service guy fearing I could damage the turbo or something else. A techie friend of mine is coming to inspect the vehicle. He also has vRS and has the tools to diagnose. Keeping my fingers crossed.

If the intercooler on the octavias is mounted on that side of the car (or pressurised pipes travel on that side of the car) then it is likely that the pipe was knocked off or damaged in some way? I don't know too much about the layout of the 'tavias but that'd me by first guess :)

The intercooler n the Mk 1 Octy is on the drivers side. the pipe from the turbo passes very close to the bottom outer edge of the inner wing so it could quite easily have become detached by an impact in that area.

Whip the wheel arch liner off and have a look - a broken or disconnected pipe should be dead easy to spot...

Thats some size of stone like..........

Were you anywhere near Stonehenge?

Thanks to everyone for the insight.

I took the car to the service station, put it on ramp and had a thorough check. Fortunately, the shield at the bottom took most of the hit, so much that i was scratching the engine. Hence the noise.

The mechanic removed the shield and the dent. For now everything is fine and that irritating noise is gone. No damage to any other part of the car.

I thought as much. To clarify what Jonny said above, the intercooler and most of the intake pipes are on the right-hand side of the car. The turbocharger itself is between the engine and the firewall, at about the same height as the alternator so would be hard to damage with a stone.
