Just get your rear axle down to Hullavington airfield off J 17 M4 near Chippenham and watch my Black RS kick some serious Scooby butt (he says in the vain belief that 225 bhp can stomp on 360 bhp)

Hope to see you there

Chris know it well went round it in my RS a few weeks back with other briskodites excellent venue, its easy for me its close to my home.

I will mail the organisers to see if its ok to spectate as they seem to have limits on spectators per driver at MOD events - Me and the wife would like to view. What times the event start/finish?

Chris,

i had ten laps up the a*se of a 320bhp Scooby, and he couldn't loose me.He could pull away a little on the straights but come the corners i could out brake him.

Even managed to get past him at one point in the WET:D .

Who needs 4 wheel drive?

Steve

Steve

Are you talking about the white one at Llandow, according to Jon that was 400 bhp.

Des,

Its was the dark blue wagon. He'd just had a new turbo & chip or something?

John

Are you guys serious? A chipped vrs against a wrx sti? Something doesnt add up here. arent you missing 100bhp or something?

in whose favour??

It's not all about bhp though! I was under the impression that the Skoda's turbo

kicks in quite a bit sooner than the Scoob's, hence the lagging on the straights.

You might find also the Scoob's insurance was quite a bit higher so he was driving

carefully for fear of hiking his premium! ;)

Rob.

2 words, "transmission loss" :D

Mine looses 11% between engine and wheels. A permanent 4x4 looses approx 25%

Then you have to look at the power delivery, especially the torque curve (or plateau). The RS boosts from approx 1800 rpm, most Scoobs don't start boosting until about 3-3,500 rpm. Always look at the area under the torque curve.

Aerodynamics: Scoobs, Evos etc are designed as rally cars and are, as a generalisation, not built for high speed running. cD on a RS is 0.29 IIRC so it is better suited to high speed stuff.

Scoobs, as standard, understeer more than Octavias.

They will however nail you with their initial traction and better gearing out of the slow stuff., but they'll run out of fuel before you do :D

Watch this space.

Studioman,

Thanks for the rides in your RS at Hullavington, it was a great experience - the car performed excellently and was great to see you overtake and keep up with much more powerful, lighter and expensive cars. The slicks worked really well even when your mate drove your car in very very wet conditions, never felt unsafe or any undo sliding.

The ride in your mates Suberu STI 300bhp was a real experience pass on my thanks to him. It was obvious when observing both of you that you are both very skilled in track style driving, your driving style was extreemly smooth and balanced - it was great to hear the positive comments by others on you and your cars track performance.

The Suberu drive sure was envolving and felt like a Rally car with the sound and roar etc very enjoyable - looking at the speedo down the straights there wans't much in it but the Octavia felt an awful lot smoother quieter and relaxed and for an all round family/track usable is hard to beat. The Suberu being the true enthusiasts car being hard to beat.

p.s why were you flashing all round the circuit?

Thanks for a great day

John

John, thanks for the comments - glad you enjoyed. We showed those Caterham buggies a thing or two eh? Especially when the 2nd one spun a 360 just at the sight of me in his mirrors!

Re Flashing - just be thankful your zip didn't break at start of proceedings - ho - very - ho.

See you when you get your Taxi sign off the yellow roof!

I think John summed it up pretty well really.

Hullavington started wet, windy and a bit down beat. Lot's of Westfields and Caterhams. Some 911's, Scoobies and other stuff like Leons and MX5's. The odd Lotus Elise.

Took the RS out and as it was pelting down kept the road tyres on. The car was wicked and when the little Dirt Devil's (Caterhams) started pulling over I knew the Jabba Warp Drive was smokin'

A few of the really light and quick cars came past, but what do you expect for a 1525 kilo taxi with a 1.8 engine??

Came in the pits and then the comments started coming in.

Scoobie driver No1 - "Just what have you got under that bonnet - I couldn't live with you on the straights?" (truth was he couldn't live thru the corners either te he)

That was neat coming from a 255bhp STi.

Anway, a guy from Ciruit Racer Mag came over and did a short interview and he was impressed by the speed of the RS.

Track began to dry out - so on with the slicks.

Oh ho - what a difference! Mighty sticky and then I needed better brakes and more power - still, it's only May!

After that session over comes Mr Caterham (having sucked up all the loose dust in his Dirt Devil first) - he was amazed by the RS - also wanted to know if I had a standard cooking engine (why yes of course..........)

Then Mr 'We'll Hire You a Scoobie for the day if you pay us millions' - he was also impressed by the slicks and the RS and commented how quick it was.

So I suppose that answered all my doubts in the other post about whether the Jabba chip was really worth it.

Yes, yes and yes again.

I may even post this off to Jabba for their hall of fame.

Overall, the day was pretty good and I met up with Jason (Black RS - company car so it didn't go near the track) he had a few laps with me.

Also John and Val turned up in the yellow subm.... I mean vRS - and he had the privilege of numerous laps in my car and a real hum dinger in my mates STI 300 -bhp.

No, I could not thump the STi - 300 horses is still too much for 226 and 1.5 tonnes!

However, it's the taking part not the winning isn't it? My filthy sump it is!!!

Winning is everything - must think of plan B.

Hey ho - a good day - everyone pleased, well everyone except my mates client - passenger who came out with me in the Subaru and then asked to go back to the pits and he was feeling very sick. Took an hour to recover. My mate must have been driving too slow that's all I can say.

All for now folks.

If you want Jabba's tel number - give me a shout.

Stop Press - My zip-fly broke and gave lot's of cause for mirth hence the comments about 'flashing around the track' - wait 'til you get Jabba'd and your zip might break too.

:

Memorable moments and thanks for reminding me at the time that laughing is not the professional thing to do :D:D:D:D No one was hurt only pride and a few lessons learnt - its a Skoda Honest. The reporter agreed with your Caterham bashing performace when interviewing you for Ciruit Racer Mag - should be interesting if published.

Time to set the display to off hire;)

Sounds like you had a whale of a time John. I'm really jealous - should have bunked off work and come along.... Next time!

yes it was excellent thanks to Studioman and his mate - I was on leave so it worked out well, especially as it was so local , the circuit used was different to the one we used on the motorsport day - this one was in my mind a lot more demanding on the car and driver with long straights chicance's and some really tight 180 corners - mainly marked out with cones. Considering the weather and the wet it was good not to see any bad spills. The organisers seemed quite safety consious and did black flag a few drivers.
