Orange Brake light on the dash HELP!

Featured Replies

Had my pads changed last weekend and now this light has appeared on the dash.....anyone have any ideas what it means? i know it's something to do with the brakes but what?

Any help before i have to drive home on the motorway would be much appreciated!

That is the front break wear indicator. Are you sure the pads were changed last weekend?!

iirc, the indicator is only on the nearside, so it might be worth it is connected properly.

Yeah, i know they were done because i work for the garage on the weekends and i got one of the blokes to change them for me whist i was off doing something else. I even saw the old pads hehe, i suppose the next question is what do i need to do to sort it? Where is Lumox when you need him!

I would start by checking to see if the cable from the pads has been connected to the wear indicator lead. iirc, they would by completing the circuit, so it is possible the new pads which were fitted did not have the suitable lead, and thus the socket from the car side of the loom has been left dangling, and has got wet due to the recent rain and is thus reporting the pads are worn.

Can you make a visual check of the pads to ensure they are all ok - if so then I would not worry too much. I drove my car for another couple of k after the warning light came on, but I did check the pad depth in the mean time - it was just a case of finding the time to change the pads and disks which delayed me.

If your really worried (and I guess for peace of mind too), why not pop into a garage and get them checked - are any places doing the "free winter checks" yet?

Thanks bud, I'll be working there on Sat so as long as i know it can wait until then i can chill!

drive it carefully and check your brakes still feel normal.... if in doubt then get it checked :-)

I drove my ex gf's car once to take the dogs for a walk somewhere (rather than putting them in my clean octy), and when I braked I heard a horrible racket.... the pads had worn out all the friction material and it was breaking using pad backing on the disks..... nice. Funnily enough the gf had not reported any problems with the car! Maybe she was hoping I was going to kill myself!

well i braked hard and they worked, there still very new! Where is the sensor? is there just one on the front or on the back as well?

thanks

I think there's just a PWI on the LHF pad. The rears don't do much more than provide a handbrake function anyway, given that under hard braking the dynamic weight distribution can move to something like 90% front 1 or 2 up with no boot load.

Hey Nick,

Which pads did you replace them with?

I run Ferodo DS2500's which don't have the slot in them to plug in the brake pad wear indicator.

You can make the circuit so that the light doesn't show or simply ignore it.

My brake pad light is lit and has been for the last 2 years or so

I know the pads aren't worn so I can live with it.

There is a way to turn the light off using Vag-Com but I've never been able to work out how!
