Contaminated Diesel Problem

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone, as said before on the newby section; I had my 1.9TDi Octavia since new about 4years ago, 70,000miles nothing gone wrong yet apart from 2 noisy wheel bearings replaced last year.

Ok my problem: I was up in Scotland monday and filled up at an Esso South of Edinburgh, about 20 miles later on the motorway the car cut out, no warning, still had the electrics but no engine, brakes, steering etc. No engine management lights at all.

The AA came out, did a diagnostic and no error codes, it got taken to another garage and they couldnt find anything wrong - told me I was a muppet for putting petrol in (no petrol is evident!)

Now it is at Skoda in Edinburgh, they've taken 2 days and have had a fuel test done and the fuel I got is contaminated (probably water). Ok my question is what will need replacing and what likely is the damaged? - They checked the oil filter and found no metal bits.

I can also put how heavy the car is....my old Pug 206 was ok, but I had to push it off the road and up a slope - ouch!

Thanks people!

Why would they check the oil filter if its a fuel problem

They checked everything, its taken them since Monday morning to work out its a fuel problem. They checked the oil filter as they thought the engine had gone bang (very quiet if it was!), they also checked the fuel filter, fuel pump, injectors etc.

Now got a phone call and the engine is being taken apart tomorow...12 hrs labour - gulp! I'd be very surprised if the engine has let go with my style of driving and care my old Pug 206 1.9 Diesel did 325K miles before it went.

No need to tear apart the engine for water. The filter should've stopped the water, and the little that got through killed it via the ECU detecting crap coming up the lines.

Just change the filter, drain the tank, lines, re-prime the fuel pump and drive it gently for about 100 miles with fuel line aditive, then drive it hard for another 100.

IMO, they're just using the chance to rip you off some.

When the car was taken by the AA to its "approved" garage they tried to run it off an external tank and it wouldn't start, just kept turning over, plus they have cleared the lines, drained tank (taken sample) etc. - still no life.

The ECU detected nothing wrong, the car has had three diagnostics in three different places.

They are taking it apart to give a damage assessment....as nothing else is damaged and it ain't starting. I might not be water....it was just one possible cause.

That case, then, it's a sound idea. Although I'd still try checking all the different sensors first, rather than cracking the engine open.

Agree with that as seem bizarre to strip the engine for an external problem.

Have you approached to garage that sold the fuel for compensation if the fuel has been tested contaminated?

Ok....update, the fuel I got still has something in it, Trading Standards are involved more tests.

For the people above saying it has nothing to do with the engine, they took the cover off, pistons are a complete mess - whatever the crap is, it has wrecked the engine. But not damaged the pump, or fuel lines or damaged anything else. Weird?? So further updates when I go up and have a look next week

Drain the tank, slap in a new fuel filter, Italian tuneup. 30 minutes or less, job done.

 oh my god wtf was in that fuel ?

 oh my god wtf was in that fuel ?

At a guess a **** load of sand that somehow got through a filter (no idea how) or more likely bacterial growth from old fuel.

Whatever it is; it has stumped me, AA, AA's approved garage, Skoda Scotland and my local garage :holmes:

Atleast we know Esso have plenty of money for repairs  I'm not looking forward to the bill....

you'll be lucky getting money off them, then again trading standards may be able to throw there weight around
