Featured Replies

Hello i just would like to share my stupid disadventure.........

a couple days ago the oil service indicator came on, so i belived to pop up some oil.........well probably i put to much and after a couple miles the worst ever.........the car start to smoke from the exhaust and the throttle was completely open....absolutely without control.......i quickly managed to pull on the side of the road and turn of the engine off....called the RAC the fella came along saying sorry we don't do oil draining.....but basically is been really kind to explain how to drain by myself.........the only thing that really scary me now is if the car is gonna be ok after a drainage.......the fella olso says that i'm been really lucky because the engine could blow.

please i need advice....

many thanks

Two options:

a) pop down to your local factors and buy one of the oil drain kits which is basically a very large syringe like receptacle and a pipe which you put down the dip stick hole and draw the excess oil out with (a lot of garages use this for changes). That shouldn't cost too much.

I would be tempted to try draining it myself and see how it works out. If all appears well when you restart it then pop down to your local garage then and get them to take a look at things just to make sure that there hasn't been any damage. Chances are that as you turned it off as soon as the symptoms started then damage should be minimal if any.

you've probably ruined the cat tbh

Go and buy yourself a new sump plug, drain it yourself (easy to do) or pop up to screwfix and get one of these to pull the excess oil out through the dipstick tube:

Laser Fluid Extractor - Screwfix.com, Where the Trade Buys

or the same thing cheaper:

Oil Extractor Pump - Mailspeed Marine

I'd pull out enough to get it to about half way on the dipstick, then leave the car for an hour or so and take it for a run. After that get a clean air filter in the box (Yes the oil can end up in here depending on the breather design) and keep an eye out for any excess oil.

What engine is in the car and how much did you put in?

For future reference the difference between empty and full marks on the dipsticks is usually 1/2 a Litre on small engines and 1L on pretty much anything else. If in doubt put in 250ml, then wait and check and then add it in small increments until you're over the half way mark.

If it's petrol as Tom said you may have shafted the cat and I would also be looking at getting a new set of, or cleaning the spark plugs as these will now have a film of oil over them or burnt onto them.
