Number plates..

Featured Replies

Im thinking of getting some black and silver ones for my furby.

Ok so i know i will get pulled, but if i carry my original legal ones in the car would he still fine me if i say ill swap them over in front of him?

Cheers

Whats the point - you'll just keep getting pulled every time you put the illegal ones back on and keep getting fined.

No point in doing this now, they are really hot down here and just last night saw another car pulled over and the plates getting a good check over.

FPN is £60 although no points, and if you have a cherished plate and you are pulled then you run the risk of losing it each time.

I was considering like german plates for mine but can't be bothered with the hassle from plod even if they were the new legal ones that Dubmeister are doing.

I don't think it's worth the hassle I would keep them as showplates.

I personally wouldn't bother now either....not worth the hassle for getting pulled.

And keeping the original plates in the car just shows you know it was wrong to put on the black/silver plates in the first place.

"Oh sorry sir about the big guns mounted on the bonnet, I have the standard one in the boot though?..."

mate you'll get fined.

That will do me, thanks people!

You could of course get the black / silver plates and use them when at shows..... If used with some nice German / Czech surrounds it's a 10 second job when you get there.

Cheers

Dave.

Isn't it £30?

Also, STOP ILLEGAL NUMBER PLATES springs to mind. Wonder how many 'twit' points a black/chrome number plate would be?

I had an email from Showplates.com saying that the laws will change and that anyone with a number plate which is not regs they will get fined.

That`s most of the country then.

You are correct. It is £30, as it is a non endorsable fixed penalty notice. I have had the pleasure of dishing out many!

I do hope you're as vigilant with fog-light morons, idiots who don't know what indicators are for, ****s who don't realise that roundabouts often have 2 lanes, or that you leave a roundabout to the left NOT right, and feckwits who don't think anyone else has a right to be on the road at the same times as them so don't ever check their mirrors or blind-spots before any move ! All of these are significantly more likely to cause an accident, injury or even death than a slightly mis-represented numberplate. Much like when I called to ask for assistance when 4 youths were jumping on my neighbors car roof and was told they were too busy to attend, but the next morning there were 3 Volvo's, 2 bikes and 2 vans along with possibly 12 or more officers ensuring nobody misused the 2+ lane on the way into town (which conveniently reduces the roads capacity by upto 50% at the busiest times of the day). I read daily of people getting pulled for plates and tints, but rarely for anything actually dangerous ! Might be to do with it being easy to log a successful pull !

Couldnt agree more.

ANPR cameras cant pick up plates otjer than the standard font, so your effectively avoiding a tax check.

They could, but to check every possible font takes too long to scan the entire DB.

Scanning for just one font, any plate can be checked against the entire DB in less than 1.5 secs.

I thought they had to be able to pick up all fonts used in EU countries.

they can pick up most fonts, i know for a fact the German FE font can be picked up.

Yep they will pick up different fonts.....and signwriting on vans, and street signs and other really useful stuff like that!

Main issue with different fonts and bad spacing is that it often misreads it and in trying to work it out, finds a similar number on the database and sets off the alert, which disturbs the drowsy traffic cop, who then stops you to check it out!

And to confirm earlier answers, if it doesn't have the BS mark on the plate then its not legal. - Personally, if it looks right its ok, but some others may not take that view!

I see you are having a 'slight' go at us Police there! I fully agree that at times we cannot be everywhere at once. Sometimes I have been the only car out in my area. If you have more than one 999 call drop (which happens alot)in at the same time, what do you do? Some jobs require more than one officer to attend and deal before being resumes to the next. I spend very little time dealing with traffic offences as simply i dont get the time too. I spend all my time going to domestics, assaults, burglaries, robberies, sexual offences, shoplifters, rtc's etc.

Your opinion of us is only what you see, hear and making up your own opinion and not what is actually going on behind the scenes. Because members of the public are not privvy to that information, as most is confidential.

I would love to take anyone out on shift with me and see what the job is really like and the pressures involved with dealing with different situations. We do special operations and thats why you would see loads of cops out. Generally most of those would be special constables, to enable us full time cops to try and do our best with the resources that we have.

All I would say is dont have negative slant on us because generally most of us do want to help people. But at times we cant, as we cant split ourselves into two.

I was recently pulled over for my number plate, it was incorrectly spaced and had the motorbike digits, still very legible in my opinion but i was still charged for it. Nice Mr. Police man only charged my £30 for one plate though - and i had the legal ones in the boot of the car. I figured if i was honest and told him that i may have got away with it but no - instead he told me he wasn't going to give me a warning he was going to charge me for it because i was already aware they were illegal, doh!

Moral of the story - always plead ignorant and if after the first time you get caught just run the legal ones, i am. I can't risk getting stopped again as if you get caught 3 times with illegal plates/spacing they can take my private plate away.

I got caught the other day as well, mine was not spaced correctly on the back and front, no company name on there, no BSA stamp and my front plate is smaller due to open mouth mod, the copper was alright about it, I pleaded ignorance and he gave me a £30 fine, even though I had broken about 6 different laws! Ha!

I had been driving with it like that for a good 6 months though, they told me if they caught me twice again they would change my plate.

The copper made a fair point that if the car was pinched, they would struggle to pick the number plates up by their squad cars and CCTV's, as whilst I was sat in the back of his car, it picked up every passing cars std plate, and dodgy spaced or smaller ones it didn't and flagged their attention...

I got a plane plate, bar the reg, not legal, but I like it with nothing on, and i'd be bloody unlucky to get done for them lol.

I see you are having a 'slight' go at us Police there.....etc etc

I sympathise with you, it's a job I would love to do but would not be able to as I couldn't cope with not being able to deal with d!ckheads in a way which might teach them some respect, I wouldn't like being assigned to mundane tax collection duties whilst some smack-head is stomping on a granny for 50p towards his next bag, I simply could not turn a blind eye to some inconsiderate, selfish tw@ driving badly in favour of the easy pull of a (possibly extremely good driver driving perfectly safely (or maybe not)) speeding car. I know several officers, and having spoken to them about the job and I know I could not do it, and fully understand (as best as a member of the public can) the dilemmas you face in doing your best whilst your hands are tied by your superiors, politicians, lawyers and judges. Yet my frustrations are founded on my own experiences as an ordinary bod, and as a car driver whom feels like I am being constantly watched with a view to having money extracted at the slightest chance when 'real', 'serious' crimes which affect people directly, not theoretically, seem go on without much attention, and are almost accepted as a way of life and we should just get used to it as there's never going to be anyone there to help, deter, arrest or prosecute, so just phone in for a crime number so you can claim on your insurance 'cos we're too busy catching motorists. In 2004, 10,000 burglars were sent to gaol, but 15,000 motorists. I suppose you could argue that burglars rarely kill whereas 3000 people die each year on the roads. But, how may of that 3000 are pure accidents, and how many a direct result of deliberate law-breaking ? I could reduce that number by 26% overnight by simply banning motorcycles, another 200 with pedal cycles. Add in jaywalking pedestrians, often drunk and you may see several hundred more. Drink/drug driving could reduce it significantly further. So, how many are killed pure and simply by speed ? The p!llocks in power would have us believe that they ALL were, and let's face it, if cars didn't move then they'd probably not kill anyone, so ALL road accidents are speed related aren't they ?

Hit a mental block and am off to bed now.

They will still give you the fine you could get away with it parked up as you could say there show plates but all depends on the copper and how they are feeling at the time

At the end of the day, we all know the laws on it and really for that reason alone we have no excuses if we are to get caught.

- plus it aint the police that make up the law, they are just there to enforce it.
