Featured Replies

Hello

My brakes makes a kind of metal to metal sound... they brakes are only ½ year old.. and only done 5000 km and there is much left on them... but they still makes that sound... what can i do to make it go away ??

tried brake hard from 100 km/t dosent help.

it is always there.. but i can only hear it when the car comes to a stop.. and then i brake.. and the last 10 meters it makes that sound...

i can see some dirt on the disc and some "lines"... but the disc is smooth to touch :)

do i need new disc or pads ??

and the sound i only from the back.. maby alittle from the front.. but not much..

is it normal ?? or ??

the car brakes normal and dosent vibret

Mine does that too...I just put it down to hard brake pads, but I'd be interested to hear anyone elses opinions.

Mine IS an Octavia - I didn't read your profile before answering.

You can put all sorts of different pads on, all will have different characteristics!

ok... but it could be nice if the "metal" sound would go away...:) my 11 year old car i had before this car did not make that sound....

Do yourself a favour and avoid the greenstuff.

IMHO the redstuff ceramic are pretty good unless you'll be tracking lots.

To be fair, I'd just take your car out and on an empty road do a few high speed (60/70) to 10 mph stops to hopefully clean up the disc surface.

The OEM pads are IIRC semi metallic anyway so you will get a bit of noise from them

oki so there is noting to do... the brakes will always make noise ??

sound not right in my ears :) heheh

i sure hope it is wrong ! ? ! ?

I would be a bit worried about this myself as I thought that sort of sound usually happens to indicate wear on the pads/discs.

I had something similar recently (but not a Skoda) and it was a brake wear indicator making the noise.

Happy to be corrected by someone more technical than me though!

It depends, a slight metailic rubbing noise will be normal, but a metallic grinding/screetching noise and a loss of braking performance would indicate the backing pad or calliper is touching the disc.

Without hearing the noise i wouldn't like to judge, but if they all look good with plenty of meat in the pads I'd give my suggesting a try.

At the end of the day, if you are unsure, the only solution is to get a garage to check.

Model:57-reg Fabia 2 1.2 70hp Hatch-Noticed that although light/check braking is OK,if I need to brake harder it feels that only the front brakes are doing anything-wondered if anyone else had experienced the same trait?Perhaps non-ESP cars like mine are slightly less sharp?

1.4 TDI I am not that impressed I have to say. They are not as sharp as I am used too. That is with 3700ms so they should be run in now.

Do you guys have discs all round or front discs, rear drums?

i got discs all round..

Discs on the front only. I am usually wrong but the discs do seem on the small side in circumference. That said mine has 3700 miles so I doubt the brakes are going to get any better?

Only get discs all round in the UK if you specify the ESP option.

IMO they make a big difference as well. The two Fabias I've driven with discs/drums have had a much softer brake pedal (need to push the brake pedal further and harder) than mine with discs all round.

That said, my brake pedal is still softer than I'd ideally like.

I was going to say I have noticed that the rear drums do seem to give the car a bit less stopping power, but that might just be due to a different brake balance on those cars.

What I will say is that in general drums makes for a better handbrake that won't potentially release after a hard drive and then it cooling.

Might be worth mentioning it to the main dealer, maybe they will offer you some less compressible brake fluid.

Steffan, just noticed your post about your brakes. You may well have a stone or some other foreign body imbedded in one or more of your brake pads. This will often cause a noise of some kind. If that is the case and the vehicle is braking correctly in a straight line, you need not do anything about it as the stone or foreign body will always wear away without doing any harm...usually! But, as the blokes say...different pad types can also make differing noises...but as long as it isn't very loud or what would normally be thought of as 'abnormally loud' then don't worry IF, the vehicle is braking in a straight line. If it pulls to one side then get this investigated asap.

I'll add that your brakes should not be unduly noisey at anytime. It does usually indicate something is wrong if they are.

[email protected]...there is a strong braking bias towards the front brakes on road going vehicles. I'm assuming the Fabia to be the same as any other vehicle here, I haven't checked mine yet. However, normally a pressure regulator valve directs more pressure to the front brakes depending upon the load your are carrying. Your regulator may need checking/regulating if you are noticing undue amounts of front end dive due to braking forces.

My Fabia 1.4TDI PD 80 (Discs front only) has superb and almost completely silent brakes. Pedal is very firm but still offering very good feel. It stops from any speed on a sixpence...if you see what I mean.

Stone stuck in disc perhaps ? Had it this before on a previous motor and it drove me crackers !
