Felicia rear disc brake conversion

Featured Replies

weheeeyyy finally got them working!

I think in the end it was a combination of the limiter valve, flexi hoses and still abit of air in rear.

Took the limiter valve out and piped it straight through for now, probs get a bias valve in the future, replaced the rear flexi hoses and pipe that straight up aswell and then finally used your trick Jim lifted the caliperdo the bleed was at the highest point and managed to get abit of air out.

Thanks for your help.

is it worth posting pictures of how to do it? I have enough photos to make a step by step guide as i took a photo at each point of the conversion....

  • Hi Tom, Sorry for slow response - took me a while to remember to take pictures whilst the wheels were off. Anyroad, here's a couple of pictures of the Midilite installation. They use 256mm Vented D

alright nugget, do you have a drawing of this with the dimensions on?

sorry mate i dont have one, but i think its 60mm overall length, all it is, is some hydraulic tube with a washer welded onto it, cant remember the internal diameter of the tube though or even the size of the washer!

Bump, I've had a few pm's asking questions about this, the thread is a little cluttered up with random stuff, does anybody mind if I lock this thread and start a new one? Can I use the photo's etc?

Fine with me, new one could be made a sticky

done mine what a difference.... still sorting hand break out do i switch calpiers round

Im not sure how tom did it but i switched them round so the handbrake would work, but if you do switch them make sure you get all the air out by tilting the caliper up when you bleed them otherwise you will have no footbrake

I decided to go against the tradition of putting the calipers upside down like you have and went with the radical idea of putting them the right way up like this

rather than use a seperate spacer tube I decided to weld a spacer to the hand brake brakcket (which detaches from the calliper) then use an additional spacer at the hand brake lever end.

Did you have to modify the routing of the handbrake? Cos mine fouled the beam if i had them that way

Yeah my little spacer thing is much shorter than yours, so it doesnt foul the beam, and also hence why I used an additional spacer at the lever end too, I modified the oem hand brake cable, I shortened the spring on the cable inner by about 60mm or 80mm iirc because with it still in situ it became coil bound before the hand brake became effective and made the cable squirm.

because the cables on mine come right up underneath the axle beam to behind the caliper, they are not long enough, so I missed out the centre cable fixing point which is on the bottom of the fuel tank mounting strap and cut the corners a bit so to give me a longer cable run, also cut the corners on the legs of the axle beams too and just cable tied the handbrake cables up to secure them into position rather than using the oem fixing points

The reason you struggled so hard bleeding them is because the calipers are upside down, ie the fluid input union is above the bleed nipple... Its not impossible to bleed them like that but just quite difficult, you would need a pressure bleeder.

i need help on mine please can't figger out the hand break... carrying 2 bricks lol could i just get one from a golf mk3 or is it only the felicia one that fits and how do i make the spacer got mot on the 16th and my shoes are shot in old drums thats why i put these on

What is it you can't figure out? The cable routing? or something else.

I used the original felicia handbrake lever and cables, but i just chopped about 80mm out of the spring on the caliper end of the hand brake cables.

the adapter for it and the routing tom but i must admit there a good conversion never fort the back would lock up lol

so are them hubs and calipers straight out of a mk3 gold gti ??

  • Author

yes the stub axle, brake calipers and carrier brackets are from a mk3 golf gti or vr6, the 4 stud discs are from a mk2 golf gti

If i use stub axles, calipers and carrier brackets from a golf 3 gti do i need to use the discs from golf 2 gti? Or will some other kind of disc fit?

You need to use mk 2 disks if you wanna stay 4 stud I used mk3 stuff with mk2 disks and a spacer made from some 2ply hydraulic hose for handbrake cable

Hi guys,

I am thinking of installing disc brakes for my favorit too and would like to ask some questions:

Can i use the same disc brakes and calipers that you guys are using to convert the felicia ones?

Will i be able to use the same wheels after the conversion? i.e. would the hole match up with the favorit ones?  as i would love to keep the same rims..

Apart from the disc brakes and calipers would i need to change or modify anything else? I keep getting told that to do the disc conversion i could possibly have to change the master cylinder (to a more powerful one) and also install a pressure regulator to adjust the braking..

Will the braking improve by a lot?

For my final question:

The car is my every daily driver, what would i be better off with, the normal drums or disc brakes?

I am thinking of installing the disc brakes both for the looks and improved braking power that they bring.

I also heard that there are some cars that came from the factory with a drum and disc setup. i.e. the disc would be used for normal braking and the drum would be used for the handbrake. is it true? and is there maybe one that could fit?

That depends on the age of your fav mate, if it on a carb then it will have 98mm pcd rims, if it is on injection then it will be on the 100mm pcd rims which is the same as the golf
