Subtle marketing?

Asked my dealer today and he hasnt sold a single 1.4 or 3.6 petrol

I'm interested in the 1.4 but I'm unsurprised that a dealer hasn't sold any. It would help if they actually had some 1.4 demonstrators. So far I have been unable to locate one anywhere and I won't buy a car I haven't tried. It doesn't help that it only comes in poverty spec too. Most people spending so much on a new car today would want some luxury. I also wonder if a lot of Superbs are bought as company cars and the budget will typically be enough to buy an A4 or BMW or good spec Skoda?

He had only ever sold one 1.4 Octavia as well

The 1.4 TSi is not to be confused with the weedy 1.4 normally aspirated unit.

I am aware of that, thanks we were actually talking about the TSI engine

Apologies, when you mentioned the Octavia 1.4, I assumed you were referring to the 80bhp one which is only available in the base S trim on the new Octy facelift. I doubt that any dealer has got a 1.4 TSi 122bhp Octy in yet, certainly not the DSG, let alone a demonstrator?? So that situation is not exactly conjusive to sales..

As for the Superb, the 1.4TSi is also only available in base S trim, which is a shame, most folk wanting a few more bells n' whistles than that offers. Even in the Superb, that engine provides 125mph and a 0-62 of 10.5 which is good for such a large heavy car and outperforms the 1.9TDi oil burner. That coupled with 250Nm of torque from 1500 to 4500 rpm, a combined fuel consumption figure of 41.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 157 g/km make it a good all round petrol choice.

If only it was available in more trim levels.

I will be looking at the 1.4 TSi in either the Superb or the Octavia

The Octy is attractive because it can come with the 7 speed DSG box and is more economical than the manual. Combined mpg for 1.4 TSI DSG is 44.8 mpg which for an automatic is very good, 0-60 of 9.7 secs as well

Skoda UK have told me that the Superb 1.4 TSi DSG will not be available in the UK even though it is listed on the main Skoda website

Not wishing to post Octy stuff in the Superb section. I have ordered the 1.4TSI DSG Octy. The only way I could currently reach a test drive assessment was via the latest Mk6 Golf SE 1.4 122PS TSI DSG and a facelifted Octy 1.9TDI - bit of a strange route enforced by no Octy demonstrator being available. The DSG Octy also comes with standard ESP, which is an option with the manual version, plus standard Hill Start Control.

Also, the CO2 emissions are 154g/km on the manual and 147g/km on the DSG making it one VED band lower (Band C)

saving of £25 per year

just how much extra is the dsg box version ??

The answer to your question is £1085.

That's not the point though, the lower VED band is just an added benefit. It is unusual for a manual

to be beaten by an automatic, albeit a semi automatic in this case. Also, it is quite normal to

pay a premium for auto transmission over a manual as it is for a diesel rather than petrol.

They are after all, purely personal choices.

Well it is the point really , people see a £25 per year saving or an extra few mpg and forget about the extra money the car costs in the first place

Congratulations on your new car choice.

How did you find that the DSG box worked with the 1.4 engine when you tried it in the Golf?

Did it still feel powerful enough, and was it 'calm' in that it was not frantically changing up and down gears

It was very smooth and responsive probably helped by the 7 speed box. There were no indecisions between first and second gear huntings during my test with seventh gear being overdrive. Overtaking with this set up would be a doddle with bags of oil burner type torque and quick response. I really could not believe it was only a 1.4 under the bonnet and there was no turbo lag whatsoever. The Octy is a heavier car of course than the Golf but not enough to make a lot of difference. That unit in conjunction with the 7 speed DSG left me very impressed.

I am between those two cars.. The superb 1.4 tsi elegance (in Cyprus) and the octavia 1.4 tsi, dsg elegance.

I have had a test drive with the superb and it was superb . I loved the power and i could not believe that it was a 1.4 engine in the car! It felt like a limo with all this luxury and the smooth driving made it my dream car.

This Saturday i will be in the octavia 1.4 tsi, dsg version and the debate will end :o

Of course some of the equipment of the superb won' t be included in the octavia package (17'' alloy wheels, bluetooth, hill control, xenon lights, front parking sensor, electric seats with memory and some other staff i can't remember now). But it is more economical than the superb and 100kg lighter and 4 900 euro cheaper..hmmm.

What would you do?

Depends if you really need the Superb's extra space which I think is most notable in the rear.

The 7 speed DSG's I believe all come with standard fit ESP and Hill Start Control?

Please post your assessment of the Octavia in 1.4 TSI DSG guise. Cannot get hold of a demonstrator as yet in the UK.
