? Dodgy MAF ?

Featured Replies

Ok here the symptoms...

1)using LOTS of fuel, especially round town

2)No acceleration, yet on-board computer shows lots of fuel being used when accelerating

3)power dropped from 145.5 to 97.5bhp and torque 321 to 140!!!!!!

4) When crusing on the motorway can get normal ish feel if a little more juicy, but no get and go at all

5)back of car getting sooty quick!

So im thinking we are over-fueling and this is due to the maf causing the ecu to have more air than it has. Correct???? And will changing the maf fix this????

I would suspect more a turbo related problem, maybe an intercooler hose off something along those lines.

If you not getting any unusual noises or smoke Id say its the MAF.

The MAF will control fueling for the engine and they are common as muck to go down. VAG now doing exchange ones for around

My MAF is going through a dodgy patch - I was on the verge of getting one from ebay, but then suddenly it came back to life... Is it possible for a MAF to go a bit a.w.o.l and then suddenly become OK?? :( At the moment my car feels like all 154 horses are there, but when the MAF was being patchy, I felt like I was driving an SDI! :( Touch wood [touches forehead ;-) ] its been OK for three of four weeks now so I'm hoping there was just a bit of cr4p in there affecting the sensor and now its blown through... *phew!

With my car at 49700 miles, it's come to that time to get some more Millers XFE-PD and change the oil & fuel filter. Also got to clean the cotton green filter with my newly arrived cleaning kit... I think I'm gonna have to look up how to do this...

I've taken the plunge and gone for this one. This could be a good bargain to offset my numptiness yesterday. Doesn't seem a bad price, and I've confirmed with the buttco catalogue thats its the right part number too! Me is one chuffed punter! :D

Andy, also if you can find someone with VAG-COM you can measure the air flow through the MAF and see if it's correct..... Must see if mine's ok as it's on 60k miles now and it must be due to break ;)

So no-one tempted to replace it with a Merc MAF? :D

Andy if you fancy doing some Vag-com reading while your still in Liverpool, give us a shout.

I was advised against this by Ross - more trouble than the extra power is worth ;) I'll see how long this OEM airmass meter lasts in my car now, as I'm due to reoil my filter, so you know what's gonna happen! (follow the instructions carefully, thats what!)

Didn't realise they offered more power - just thought they were better quality so less likely to go wrong :)

Ross can confirm but I think the Merc MAF worked by sending different signals to the turbo and increasing boost or something like that. sorry if that sounds numpty, but I'm sure Ross will dictate a much more techie reason. Apparently, it made Ross' engine management light come on.. something I wouldn't fancy ;)

No as usual you got your wires crossed Jason.

My engine management light come on with the Merc MAF because my car was remapped further for the hybrid turbo. Doing this put the requested MAF signals from the ECU out of range of the sensor. My car is fine on the std MAF as it was with the Merc one when the car was first remapped to stage 1.

A standard car should run just the same with the Merc MAF sensor, but they dont last any longer the VAG ones, they are just a bit cheaper thats all.

Well the car has just done 250mile from Liverpool on the new maf. And WOW! 5th gear now has the afterburner effect back and we are getting at least 5mpg (10%) better. The "test run " was in slightly damp conditions and yep I knew it was working when the asr came on in 1st, 2nd and 3rd!!!!!

Anyone need a maf speak to euro car parts first they where simply superb. The maf they suppied came complete with housing but to save time I took the sensor out of the new housing and it was a straight forward fit into the old housing.
