Driven Mad By Creaky Seat

Featured Replies

The driver's seat in my vRS is slowly driving me nuts.

When I press the clutch pedal, it creaks.

When the car accelerates, it creaks.

When I rock myself back and forth with the increasing madness, guess what?

Anybody else suffering in a similar fashion?

Any ideas as to a cure?

The seat only started creaking when 10,000 miles were clocked up.

As there are no springs in the seat, I suspect the height adjustment mech may be to blame. Either that or a mouse.

  • Any WD40 type spray works fine (sorry we used up all the wise and witty comments back in 2008.... ) Mr Wobblytickle was a one off that's for sure... It does need reapplying from time to time, more

You need to install a new cat

I have not had a problem with the seats in SWMBO's vRS in 66K, but others have reported

similar experiences. Hope you get it sorted soon as it would drive me nuts :)

Suggest you move the seat on the rails to the next adjustment "stop" that often cures it but you might have to do the same again back to the original position. Sometimes just moving it back and forth then returning to the original position works too, maybe spreads the lube grease a bit on the floor rails.

Same with seat height and back adjustment, the small changes seem to have some effect.

Mine varies with temperature and humidity, never been a major problem but like you it was noticeable around the 10k period. Now on 23k and its been OK for a long time.

Lots of climatically induced creaks in the Fabia, most cars have their own 'creak fingerprint'! One of those character traits;);)

Yup! I'm not squeaking alone: http://briskoda.net/fabia-i/creaky-seats/46403/

No cures, though.

There was one of sorts, but the problem turned out to be not seat-related, so no help.

My car, although an 04-plate, has 10 months' warranty still to run.

I wonder if the squeak would be covered?

It could be argued that the squeak is a safety issue, as it is a distraction and makes me drive like a loon in an attempt to drown it out.

Will call my local Skoda garage on Monday and update.

mine squeaks/creeks as well, and it is quite annoying, but i have begun to live with it!

Would love to know a solution, but it seems as though one isnt forthcoming. My creak seems to comefrom the seat itself rather than the rails etc

I'll give it a bash tomorrow.

That and a few strategic squirts of Creak-B-Gone.

Try adjusting the position, it costs nothing and takes seconds. If that doesn't work then its the hard route to a resolution unfortunately.:)

Mine too.

Will search for a cure at first light.

Next question is: how does one remove the driver's seat?

Remove a few nuts, or something more devious?

Eureka!

I've found a cure.

So much for morning light.

All hail The Torch and a can of Creak-B-Gone (generic PTFE-enhanced lube spray).

Ably assisted by my better-half's shell-like, I traced the creak, not to the seat back, but to the base, or more precisely, one of the two springs found lurking inside (just pop off the plastic shroud to get in. The right-hand side comes away without any screws having to be removed and opens in a door-like fashion).

The spring that seemed to be emitting the creak, either along its twisted length, or when it met hard metaly bits, was the one that ends in a handle and brings the seat closer to, or further away from, the pedals (the lower one in the pic).

A few squirts of Creak-B-Gone, some handle waggling and truly the Creak Was Gone (and still is).

As it is entirely possible that either or both springs (the other is for height adjustment) could be responsible for creaks in other cars, it is vital that both are liberally and accurately treated with Creak-B-Gone.

May all your creaks be similarly silenced.

I had the same problem for a month and it went away recently. May be linked to the seat position moving.

Tell you what drives me mad, the passenger seatbelt buckle vibrating on the centre console at certain RPM's

where can i fetch this can of Creak-B-Gone?!:D

Not been afflicted by that one... yet.

Creak-B-Gone is a rather specialist and expensive item, but some good old 3-In-One with PTFE is readily available from the likes of Halfrauds for a few groats and works equally well.

Quite likely.

Must have been moved out of 'creak mode'.

May well revert back, though.

Then it's time for Creak-B-Gone!

i shall hunt it down then...gotta pop out tomorrow to Skoda to enquire about something, so will pop in on my way back :)

Happy hunting and May The Creak Not Be With You (subsequently).

he he!

Silly question...but where did you spray? just all over the spring?

You betcha!

Anything and everything that looks 'a bit coily' or 'spring-like' gets it.

All two of them at least.

Also target where spring ends terminate on metal bits.

Might be back tomorrow, of course, but I'm quietly confident it won't.

Many thanks for the well worded assistance! Wiil try this one myself later.

I have cured this in my VRS:

I work for a supplier to Toyota and we use adhesive backed foam rubber strips on our product.

Cut to length, stick them between the buckle and the console - Bob is the brother of your Mum!

PM me and I will get some and post them to you! They come in a couple of diferent types and can be very handy.

HTH.

You're welcome.

Fingers crossed your creak is of a similar origin and there aren't other possible creak candidates hiding out under there.
