A righteous bodge for exhausts!

Featured Replies

This could apply to practically any car on the road, but mine's a Fav so I'm posting it here....

The correct exhaust hangers seem terribly hard to find for Favorits and the 'universal' rubber rings sold by all motor factors are slightly too short. Having adopted various not-very-good bodges in the past, I had a brainwave this morning and made up some custom hangers from lengths of discarded fanbelt and some wire-rope grips. Everyone has a couple of the former hanging around and the latter cost about 30p from a hardware shop. Old-style A-section fanbelt is much better than modern flat type: cut it roughly to length with a Stanley knife and make up a hoop with the rope grip. The resulting hanger is fully adjustable (useful when, as often happens, a 'pattern' exhaust is not quite right) and has just enough springiness to work very nicely - plus it's as tough as old boots and practically free!

or you could just buy the proper ones from your skoda dealer for about £2

Yes, but A) my nearest Skud dealer is an inconvenient journey away and B) every time I drop in on a dealer as I happen to be passing they seem to be out of stock of all the useful odds and ends I want! (For instance, driveshaft nuts. The fact that they never seem to have stock makes me wonder just how many of them do actually replace the nuts every time the take the hub off the shaft, like wot it says in every book.)

yeah, that is true, ordering parts from skoda can be a right royal pain up the jacksee.. but then, felicia's and favorits are old hat now...

the driveshaft nut normally comes with the cv joint, so i suppose there's no point in stocking them seperately...

An interesting idea. As it happens my fan belt needs replacing and one of my exhaust hangers needs replacing. As the exhaust is a pattern part it doesn't look like the standard fit hanger would work well, and I did go to the dealers to pick one up.

I presume flat fan belt would work quite well with these type of wire-rope grips
