Anyone care to guess what's up with my camera before Canon Aftersales get back to me...???

I don't have a good feeling... :(

Woah! What camera and lens?

'Tis a Powershot S1 IS with the standard lens (no adaptors etc.) Just tried a firmware update to no avail. The distortion doesn't 'turn' as I zoom in and out, which suggests it's not a loose lens inside the barrel. I fear the CCD is goosed... :thumbdwn:

Good find - thanks for confirming my suspicions, Steve.

Doesn't look promising on the warranty front not being a US customer, so it looks like I might have had my Christmas list decided for me! Something like the Fujifilm Finepix S5800 matches my requirements of mega-zoom plus using AAs rather than a battery pack (something that saved my bacon more than once when nowhere near a power socket), although I'm going to miss the swivel screen for remote shots, and it looks like my trusy 4GB CF may be relegated to backup duties...

Well-known problem, I'm afraid :(

I have been offerred an SX100IS (or something like that) as a free replacement - here's hoping it actually happens!

Ah well, better than a kick in the teeth :D

Fingers crossed....

:woohoo:

Came back fixed FOC last weekend! :) Not as many megapixels as the one I might have got as a replacement, but a much better camcorder mode, and I don't lose out on a viewfinder or flip-out rear screen. All-in-all, most satisfactory - I just need to resurrect at least some of the high-capacity rechargeables I have for it after leaving them discharged for too long. Trickle charger ought to do the trick...
