DMF On its way out!?! Solid Mass Replacement?

Featured Replies

Hey all, got a 54 plate Octavia with 121k....it had a new flywheel and clutch at 108k.

But im getting a really annoying rumbling noise if i hold the engine at 1000-1200rpm. Progressively getting worse, now i do mainly town driving and im up and down the gears.

While the gear train is connected, i sometimes get the noise appearing at 2000rpm or there abouts.

But usually once its around 2300rpm-2400rpm and the engine becomes smoother, no noises can be heard.

Now i can drown it out with music, but thats not my sort of thing (seem to have grown up too fast).

Now my question is, does this sound like the DMF?

If so can it be switched for a solid mass flywheel, was looking in a mates Redline mag and one of the writers has swapped the DMF out of his 1.8T A3 for a AMD LUK clutch with a solid mass flywheel, i know petrols will be more forgiving with solid mass flywheels.

But how would a 1.9TDI cope with a solid mass flywheel in terms of smoothness, providing a suitable flywheel and clutch can be sourced?

Would imagine if doing vast motorway miles this would be better?

Hope for some input to put my mind at ease, as its the only thing thats making such a good car a misery to drive!

There are arrangments for fitting SMF parts to high mileage Octavia TDi. I will see if i can find it.

Hi

Is this a 5 speed or a 6?

I have something in mind that is all

Sarah

I can't find it at the moment, but a Skoda dealer should have the part numbers.

If you don`t want a rattling flywheel stay away from SMF as they rattle like hell. DMF shouldn`t die within 13K miles if fitted properly.

Its a 5 Speed Box, i've just realised the other thread, but its £860+ for the kit!

Hi

The SMF will rattle , but that will be when the car is in neutral

Diesels , do tend to get more noise as the engine vibrates a bit more

But then with a SMF you wont ever have a problem with them again

We do the ECS stage 1 kit @ £275 + VAT and that is the complete kit

SMF , clutch plate , pressure plate , release bearing , all the bolts required to fit the SMF and a clutch alignment tool

They are also bringing out a heavier flywheel so the diesels dont have as much noise on the tickover

Sounds good,

The improvement of a SMF over a DMF is unbelievable :D:D

Im running a Helix and SMF on a Fabia and its brilliant :)

same setup here. Do a search for details but you get:

1- faster revving

2- equivalent of dropping 100-odd pounds of weight of the car (physics)

3-minor rattle in neutral with the clutch out - only.

Well worth it, IMHO

And most importantly

4 - Great feel and bite when giving it large :rofl:

Yeah but guys Browny_37 is wanting to change the DMF because he has got an annoying rattle. By putting in a SMF he will definitely have an annoying rattle and the lighter the SMF the more rattle he will have.

The noise seems to be only heard inside the car, it almost sounds like a heatshield is loose and really grumbles through the car...and is starting to worsen by the day :(.

Im at a loss if its a shield thats loosening underneath, but while i had tyres and tracking done the other week i had a look underneath.

Looked absolutely spot on underneath with no damage what so ever, its recently had a reconditioned gearbox before i bought the car, wear had occured due to low oil and knackered engine and gearbox mounts.

The flywheel and clutch was done at 108k and now stands at 121k and im rather dissapointed, as i've heard its around £600+ to replace the DMF.

Love the car though, drives very well....goes like stink for 105bhp!

Had a play with a saxo VTS 1.6 16v on a private road the other week and the guy said once i was rolling he couldn't pull it back!

I wish id have been able to afford one with a little higher spec, as i was shocked to find out there is no rear speakers at all!

Are you still running a DMF?

I've been through so many of them now I'm getting to be tempted by a relatively heavy SMF in it's place.

Also slightly OT, but have you replaced any gearbox mounts on the 2.0 TDI as I think mine are dying. If so which ones did you go for and are they every day useable?

Ta

Used the stock DMF while running 440 lb torque for two years then only removed it because i wanted/needed a clutch to hold 600 lb torque which no company i know of makes with a DMF so had to gat a SMF fitted. Bloody hate the dam SMF same as i did when i had one fitted to my PD Ibiza Cupra back in 2005 but had no choice if i wanted to carry on with tweaking the power.

Well, i've saved myself a substantial amount of money this evening.

I cured my problem with a jubilee clip, just happened to find out it was the scoop to airbox pipe rattling!

Due to the clip not being present.
