Can anyone help. Mothers car problems - french eh!!

Featured Replies

Sorry If this isnt legit, but just wondering if anyone can help/confirm.

My mums car has problems and I'm thinking the cat has gone.

Its a 03 Megane 1.4 extreme and sounds like its running on 3 cylinders form the tail pipe. The engine seems to idle and rev fine but feels down on power.

I dont want her to take it to Renault and for them to charge the **** off her for something we can sort for half the price.

Anyone heard or had this problem with a Renault?

Any info is appreciated

Hi

If the cat has gone down , then there would be a bit of a sound about the exhaust , and also rattle

Is it doing that?

They do have coil packs on them too , so maybe worth checking them out , as it could be those that have killed the cat , may be worth checking them out

No rattle but it has problems starting on the button. Have heard about the coil pack damaging the cat though.

Cheers

Normaly if it is the cat or the coil pack you will get a yellow light on the dash cluster telling you that there is a problem

The Megane had a major problem with coils.

Each cylinder has it's own coil (I believe) and Renault went through a phase of these failing all over the place.

Both my parents and a work colleague of mine had that problem on similarly aged Megane's to the one you mention.

yea on the scenic 1 there was alot of problems, i used to work for renault. But not on the 1.4 megane 2 give renault a call with your reg number there might be a recall or known fault on that car. If they can not help pm me.

Occasionally flashes on then clears. Having a diagnostic check tonight, then go from there

I'd suspect a coil pack or a bad plug. A dead cat doesn't hurt the running unless the core collapses and blocks the exhaust system.

Yeah, will inform you later on. Did have a eggy smell to it though

yea if its coming on chance are its a coil or sensor

eggy smell is unburnt fuel, entering the cat. another vote for coil, and get it sorted soon or you will need a new cat (not cheap).

I always thought the smell was H2S leaving the cat, and a symptom of high sulphur petrol. The usual cure for that is to change brands!

Check the spark plugs, nice and cheap (£20 tops) for a set of 4.

When you're changing them you can check the coils for physical damage.

Well had it plugged in and it came back with Missfire on cylinder 1.

Changed the plugs etc and still the same. It is sparking though.

Need a compression test next.... Unseated valve maybe

Find which cylinder is running cold and swap plugs/coilpacks around :)

Agree a coil can still let it spark, but it might not be powerful enough or indeed in time with when needed.

I'd be playing musical coilpacks to see if the problems follows the pack.

Had similar on a punto recently and 1 new coil solved it.
