Strange behaviour under acceleration - vRS TDI

Featured Replies

Got a strange problem here that seems a little intermittent but is happening nonetheless.....when going about 70mph, if I start to accelerate, sometimes there seems to be what I can only describe as a misfire in the acceleration - seems to go on and off all the way up to 100mph (on my own private motorway of course ).

I thought it was down to the exhaust pressure sensor as it feels similar to when the car judders when the sensor has gone, but I had the ECU update last week so don't think it can be that.

I know that if I took it to a dealer, the problem wouldn't show itself so was wondering if anyone else has seen the same thing?

Check the EGR valve, my Fiat GPS has the same problem and my dads Octy has too

Mine started with a similar problem some while ago, but it would happen at lower speeds as well.

Problem got progressivily worse until engine management light & coil light came on and car went into limp home mode.

Garage had not long since replaced exhaust pressure sensor and thought it was the turbo pressure sensor, but following a further check concluded it was a wiring problem and the part was on back order.

That was over two weeks ago and I've still no idea when car is going to be back with me.

I know these issues aren't just happening to Skoda's, as it's a VAG wide issue, but it is making me think about where I'll put my money at replacement time.

Incidentally, does anyone know if these issues are affecting the CR engine as well, or is it to early to tell?

Dealer trip I'm afraid; they will put it on the diagnostics.

Could be one of a multitude of things; we are all quick to jump on the DPF/Exhaust gas sensor bandwagon, but don't forget the simple classic problems of contaminated fuel, restricted air supply, blocked injector, failed injector etc. etc.

Well I know it shouldn't be the DPF/exhaust pressure sensor as I've had the recall. But as it's intermittent, then I'm thinking that they probably won't find it. Had the same problem on my old Passat. Still, might book it in and see...

How do I check the 'EGR valve'?

Did a bit more testing of this on the way home tonight - it seems to start when you get to 3.5k revs or above - like a misfire that goes on and off over and over again until you let off the gas - under 3.5k it seems to be okay(ish).

Fairly quick DIY check to eliminate one cause; open up the Air Filter housing and check that there is no debris restricting the airflow/filter.

What fuel do you use? When did you last refuel? How many miles since?

Checked the air filter housing and all is clear - as for fuel, just use normal diesel from various garages (although not supermarket stuff), and this has been happening for longer than the last place I refuelled, but is getting progressively worse - today is the worst it's been so far. Am waiting for a call to see when I can get it into the dealers to be looked at...

do a search for the Brisky VAgcom owners map - hopefully there'll be someone not too far from you.

A proper scan helps sort stuff out quickly..

I'd say EGR too - the rebadged Alfa JTD in the Astra does the same thing, a quick clean of the EGR (it's a bad design) and all is OK again.

How many miles have you covered in the car?

I'd suggest getting a new fuel filter fitted before the specified interval as they can easily get blocked up in 60k and cause a few issues similar to this.

I'm on about 47k miles at the moment - only had a service about 7k ago.

So about this EGR valve - where is it, what is it, and what do I do with it?

Okay, so on my way to work this morning, keeping it below 3.5k revs and no problems - get within a mile of work, pull away from a roundabout and no power - then the glowplug light comes on. So Skoda Assist will be with me shortly.....

Commiserations :); hope they get it fixed for you; or if not their diagnostics will be able to tell you what the fault is.

It's an 'Exhaust Temperature Sensor' this time, rather than the exhaust pressure sensor - so basically when the turbo is spinning up it realises the temperature is getting high, so cuts it out, then it spins up again, and cuts out...blah blah....The recovery man says he's only seen it once before but on an Audi A5....

Seems like you are having more than your fair share of problems.

Off to the dealers, eh?

He's gonna try to fix it now, but if he can't then it will need to go to the dealers and I'll get a hire car - probably a 1.0 litre something or other, which will be nice for my 200 miles round trip commute :thumbdwn:

kick a fuss up and say a 1 litre isnt suitable for your needs. I did, originally got told they only run skoda fabia but surprisingly they'd gone out of there way and found me a 1.9PD octavia :)

Sounds like the fuel filter to me, for the small cost I'd have it done.

I was having almost similar problems in a PD140 and got the filter changed at the second variable service instead of the third. Result was the problems were gone.

It seems to me that the filter was full of crap, so when you were demanding more fuel it just couldn't flow it quickly enough. Clean filter and it could flow it again.

If you look at the air filter and fuel filter intervals you will see they are both 60k. Do you really think an air filter is good for 60k, or that the fuel filter will be good being changed only two to four times in the average life of the car?

The car is now in Camerbley Service Centre having the temperature sensor replaced - The technician seemed to think that this may have also contributed to why I have needed the exhaust pressure sensor replaced 3 times so far (!). Anyway, hopefully it will all be sorted, and they are trying to give me 'like for like' in the hire car - can't imagine it would be a vRS though :)
