hill hold ?

Featured Replies

what is the hill hold function on the superb and how does it work. i am familiar with the audi and VW system but wondered how the skoda one works because the VW/audi systems use the electromechanical parking brake which the superb doesnt have.

I drove the DSG diesel the other day and noticed on an incline the car rolled back - i wasnt expecting this because in my conventional auto it doesnt roll back of course. would the hill hold function help with this - i dont want to be faffing around using the hadbrake in an auto car.

My understanding is that the hill hold uses the ESP system to brake the wheels (just as it would during a skid or spin situation).

You switch the system on, and as long as the car is inclined above a certain angle, it will prevent it rolling backwards when you release either the handbrake or the foot brake. Not sure what the angle is, though.

I've ordered it on mine, as I quite often balance the car on the clutch when I'm stopped briefly in a hill. Now, I won't have to do this.

i do the same but i am going to be ordering a DSG. i think it iwll be good as the DSG will struggle to hold on a hill with a caravan and i will have to use the handbrake - which will be weird on an "auto" !

I can't see how using the handbrake is " faffing about ". You should be using the handbrake anyway when when you're stationary!

i never use the handbrake at the moment as we have an auto and it holds itself. we also have an electric handbrake. we will be having a DSG car that essentially drives like an auto and i think it will be odd if the car doesnt hold itself on hills and you have to use the handbrake. i guess for £100 it doesnt matter if we dont like it !

My GPS has it though i never use it, you press the brake and the car holds you automatically until you put on sufficient revs to move off without stalling.

Bagpuss is correct, however it may be different to that in the Scout as it is always permanently on & maybe you can switch it off in the Superb if not needed?

It takes a little getting used to but quite useful when your biting the clutch up a steep incline in slow moving traffic - the only niggle I have with it is sometimes you think it you are on a steep enough hill & expect it to not roll back when releasing the brake pedal - it can catch you out.

Also it holds the car for around 4 seconds then will automatically release so you have to get the revs up a little to time it right, alternatively you can simply release the brake pedal then rev the engine & release the clutch & this will release the hill hold & the way you go.

not sure how this will work with the auto though - the experiences detailed above would appear to be on manual cars not DSG cars ?

Skoda Uk Car Configurator......

Select 1.8 DSG Elegance for example - now shows Hill Hold in the 'standard' spec and not listed as an option - gets even more confusing............
