Oil Change Filter change. TiPS!?

Featured Replies

as the title really. on sunday im going to attempt an oil change and a fuel/oil filter change. anything i should look out for or is it all straight forward stuff?

car is a skoda octavia rs

merci!

Yeah as said, only thing that can be a pain is getting the old filter off. I always expect to be able to remove them by hand, but always end up having to bash a screwdriver through them to remove them! But it's awkward to do even this on the octy, so little space.

I bought one of these lovely items (LaserTools | Cup Oil Filter Wrench 64mm/14 Flute (4232)) from Halfrauds and popped a nice long bar on the end of it. Makes the experience so much nicer!

Oh and don't overfill it with oil. If you do, you may murder the cat and have to buy a new one, just get the level anywhere in the hatched area. The difference between the top and bottom of the hatched area on the dipstick is only about a litre, so watch out for that one. I fill mine to half way.

What is "AWKWARD" about filter position....chain or strap can of course be used.......would not like to hear your comments on a really awkward filter!!!

oright mate, chill out! bit lairy for a first post there!

Whoa there Cowboy ........no need too shout.

Assume you've done an oil change before. Just in case...

1. Make sure the car is level.

2. Drain the oil whilst it is still warm - it flows out much better and you get more crud out.

3. Be careful removing the drain plug and even more careful putting back or you may crossthread the sump. Don't overtighten it.

4. Don't try and change the oil filter without draining the oil first (funny to watch but not if you are the one who's doing it. Saw one the monkeys at Kwik-F*** do this). Retighten the filter by hand.

5. Remove the dipstick when refilling. Add the Oil slowly giving it time to get to the sump. Don't overfill.

6. When you have filled it to the max level, put the dipstick back and the cap on. Run the engine until the Oil Pressure Light goes out. DO NOT REV THE ENGINE to 'help' it along. If it doesn't go out after a minute or so switch off.

7. Check for leaks and recheck the level after allowing a few minutes for the oil to settle. When the engine is run, it forces oil into all the galleries and you may have to add a bit more.

Tighten new sump plug to 30nm.

4.4 litres of oil/

My first oil/filter change I used a chain and I could not get it to grip due to the lack of space. I ended up doing it the messy way with hammer and screwdriver and even that was a pig, I had to get it off as I had drained the oil.

I now have the same tool that Bodge uses and highly recommend it

They can be a butt hole if someone hasnt lubed the seal and done them up too tight. Ive had them pull the core out of the cooler before now.

I bow to your superior knowledge and experience... shame on me.

I have a set of mole grips with jams specifically designed to grab onto the oil filter.

Nothing has defeated them yet and they make one located in hard to get to place much easier and less messy to get off.
