Is it possible to install a gearbox from a 2001 octavia rs 1.8 into a 2001 Skoda Octavia 1.6.

I believe the model 02K gearbox is mounted in the Octavia 1.6 and the Octavia 1.8 come with a 02J gearbox.

The seller claims the only problem is that the mechanical gearshift linkage has to be replaced by a cable linkage, which comes with the 02J gearbox.

I'd need to check, but suspect the final drives are different, even if the input shaft splines and mounting bolts are the same.

what do you mean by the final drives are probably different. Do you mean the gear ratio ?

IIRC are the 1.6`s the same as the SDi`s and will not fit

You would have to change the flywheel, clutch, linkage, driveshafts but they will physically bolt up to the engine.

The 02K is a desendant of the 020 gearbox as fitted to the MK1 and MK2 Golf. The 020 can be fitted to a 1.8T engine (although not advised) so the reverse must be true.

How difficult is it to change the wheel ? I have everything else, clutch, driveshafts, linkage.

I am beginning to understand my mechanics reservations regarding these non standard replacements. He has been through this before and will not do the job unless i can convince him that he's not wasting my time and my wallet !!

Have everything except the a flywheel.

The flywheel shouldn't be too tricky as long as you get the right one. Sarah and Ross know even more about these things than I do (Sarah works for a well known and good VAG mod house, and Ross is a VAG trained mechanic).

The final drive (also sometimes crownwheel and pinion, abbreviated as CWP) is the final step down ratio between the gearbox output shaft and the driveshafts. Even if the gearbox internal ratios are the same, changing this changes how fast your car will accelerate, its theoretical and actual top speeds, and how fast it will be going at given engine revs in a given gear.
