sorry but what does this actually do? help with aero dynamics? takes air from the front and out past the wheels?

or does it cool down the brakes etc?

the smic can suffer from heat soak, the air goes into the intercooler but it cant get out there is nowhere for the air to pass threw so this lets the cool air in and the hot air out. removing the foglight just lets even more air in to cool down the temperatures !

does it matter that the vents have to exit at the side, just i was thinking of trimming the vent and have the vents facing down ?

well i thought of this but when it rains the water might go in with the wheel spinning so to the side must mean theres less chance of it if you reely think about it.

Whats in there that must be protected from the rain?

And surely water would cool it down faster, or thats what Subaru and Mitsubishi think?!

theres my attempt ;)

Won't matter if water gets in. Just make sure it won't let in anything larger than a badger!

I might be missing something here, but surely the cold air being forced into the engine bay and over the intercooler is cooling it down, but at the same time displacing the hot air through the underside of the engine bay as its not sealed up air tight.

I can see that it may offer some benefit if your stuck in traffic on a hot day, but if your stuck in traffic you're not needing the intercooler anyway.

I'm happy to be corrected, but i genuinly can't see how it will make enough difference to make it worthwhile.

The intercooler is not mounted in the engine bay. It is inside the wing and pretty well boxed in at that.

Well continuing on from my last message.

I have purchased the Audi TT wheel arch liner and will be fitting it friday (10th Oct) once fitted I will post pics of front and wheel arch changes, just to show what can be done... I know this is the more expensive way of doing it, but hey it's only money, (god I wish that staement was true)

any how, fitting will not take long so will sort that out and see if it makes a difference. possibly not a great deal of diference but added with the pd160 intake green cotton filter it may make a nticeable difference...

will let you know monday...

how much was the TT arch liner?

Will this mod prolong the life of the turbo by keeping it cooler?

Will this mod prolong the life of the turbo by keeping it cooler?

No, the turbo is in the engine bay and runs very hot, This mod is meant to cool down the air slightly more as the charged air from the turbo passes through the intercooler (mounted in the OSF wheel arch) so the cool air from outside has already passed throught the turbo.

Basically, the turbo will heat the air up as it passes through it and the cooler the air you can get in the cylinders the better, hense the mod to the wheel arch to let some more air out of the rather compacted space it has to do it's job.

HTH

Turbo life can be increased by removing the oil from the system I think - CCV bypass and EGR removal.

I might be wrong but this is what I've been lead to believe as oil can coat the turbo vanes and they can start to stick

how much was the TT arch liner?

Hi there,

The wheel arch liner was a grand total of £20 (well just under but hey its pennies) but you do have to reside yourself to the fact that you are going to be cutting it up and throwing away about 80% of it...

but hey it's worth while...

completed the mods to the wheel arch liner friday...

was not as hard as I thought it would be to do, just a pain in the butt to hold still due to the shape and flexibility of the liner...

Picture 1 shows the front foglight surround modifications. I have cut away every part I could without compromising the installation of the foglight grill and also the looks. as you can see it all looks the same as original really, just with larger holds. Was thinking of doing the same to the otherside just to keep car looking symetrical.

Picture 2 shows the Grill in the wheel arch. fits rather snugg and looks great. The white around the edges is just the sealant I used on there. I did not have time to let it dry before taking this picture. The sealant dries Clear so now it is dry there is nothing to see.

So far I have found that there is no improvement but I will be honest I have not had to take the car out for a long run before starting her up again a few minutes later. NO heat soak has been tested as yet... that will be the real test...

I also fitted my Jabba Rear ARB sunday too, now that was money well spent and such and easy change. The results are amazing. just ask any one that has har this done...

Any one just drilled holes?

think the possibilty of stones being thrown from the wheel, through the intercooler means that people like to fit a grille for a little added protection.

chris

I still haven't done this mod. I've thought about it and how I'd measure any improvements.

When the car is in motion, the front of the front wheel is travelling downwards. Close to the tyre, there'll be a fast moving body of air, dragged downwards. Also, due in part to the actions of the wheel/tyre dragging air around, the front or lower front of the wheelarch area "should" have a low pressure area.

The theory of modding the wheelarch is sound but IMO there's a lack of scientific data to back it up. Uncompressed inlet air temp vs compressed air temp @ boost and revs would be nice to see.

The niggle is that without data/analysis to back it up, we don't know what the full effect is.

J.

Any one just drilled holes?

Yep, peeps other than me have, here's mine, and for the cost of doing it and time taken, why not do it?
