Any tips for buying at the dealers?

Featured Replies

Hi All

I'm about to buy a new Fabia estate (1.9 TDi, 3) Any tips on getting the best deal possible at the stealers?

If youv'e just bought new, what did you do to screw that bit extra out of the stealer.

I would like to walk out the showroom knowing i've squeezed every last pound from them I could.lol

Cheers Simon

Hi Simon

I just bought a 1.9 tdi fabia 3 estate in red with esp, 3rd headrest, door sill protectors and radio remote stalk for £12, 500, on a skoda 6.9 % apr finance 3 years free servicing PCP which was £200 below drive the deal price. I took the drive the deal quote in and had no part ex, and was honest that as much as i preferred to buy from a dealer, financially i would go for the lowest price. it was the end of the month and they were very keen to do a deal. I was surprised as I would have accepted a deal slightly more than the drive the deal price to deal direct with them, but the credit crunch is biting hard. If you have no part ex, it seems now is the time to get a great deal:thumbup:

No need to quote previous post.

Ima, was that a factory order or dealer stock, thats pretty much the same price im paying on a standard 3 estate with met paint.

Go to more than one dealer, even it means a bit of driving around.

Think about the 'total' price you are looking to pay to change cars, so if one gives you more discount but less trade in, don't dismiss it out of hand.

Be prepared to take a slightly different model from stock, you are less likely to get discount on a model that requires ordering.

As a rule of thumb, I would say that in the current climate a minimum £1k off standard pricing is obtainable.

Deals results - What Car?

Have a look on this site and see what you can buy it for. The least you should go for is what car target price.

Some dealers are so stubborn that they would rather go bust than give a small discount.:(

I didn't get a discount on the list price, I had a very good valuation on my Part-exchange that was held for the 'thinking time' and the 8 week delivery time, and that time period covered the change of plate. I also got the interest-free finance and am more than happy with the aftersales.

I don't push too hard on price, but I keep the good will of the dealer and get the benefit of that good will later on. It does work well in the long run.

My car is a factory order as there were no dealer stock cars with the options I wanted. I had done some research on price possibilities and knew that I could get close to this price. I guess having no part ex was in my favour as they knew I could go elsewhere and get the price I wanted. I was however surprised at how easy this price was to achieve, but these are tough times for car dealers and they want your business. If one dealer won't haggle, there's always another who will:)

I took in printouts of WharCar?'s target price and some printouts from some brokers showing the price that the car was available for. Also had a printout of the expected part ex value for my old car.

Also did my homework using the finance calculator as I know that some dealers try their best to confuse you with numbers making things look cheap when they're not. I then knew what I would be expecting to pay per month. (One Ford dealer tried this when my wife went to look at the Focus CC last year - kept coming back with different figures and while he was explaining them, I was calculating the overall cost which kept going up. Pointed this out to him but he was completely lost when it came to figures)

I was fairly direct about what I wanted and the salesman basically came straight out and said that there was no way he would match the broker prices but would have a good go at the WhatCar price. I said that was fair and didn't really expect him to match them.

I also wanted the 6.9% APR (actually gave me slightly better than that) but had the problem of a factory order being touch and go as to whether it would arrive to be registered in time. He looked through the stock list and found one that was similar spec to what I wanted but was already on it's was from the factory.

The first attempt at calculating the monthly payment came out at £267. I said no - I've been offered an equivalent Golf Match for £275. He asked what I wanted to pay, I went in low (without taking the weewee;)) and asked for £220. I had already worked out that anything up to £240 would be a good deal. With a bit more haggling I ended up paying £233 a month.

The overall deal was a Fabia 3 1.9TDi in black (colour I wanted) with heated front seats, multifunction module, electric rear windows, small leather pack, cornering fog lights, ESP and tyre pressure monitor. Got about £950 off list price plus free rubber floor mats, a boot mat and a full tank of diesel.

The options I wanted but didn't get (as it wasn't a factory order) were 3rd rear headrest and underseat storage boxes. The ones I got that I wasn't going to ask for were heated seats, cornering fogs, leather pack and tyre pressure monitor.

Part ex price wasn't quite as high as I'd hoped (only £200 short though). Although saying that, it was obviously a good price as my old car is still on their forecourt over 5 months later!!!

Overall, very happy with the deal. Given the current climate, I could probably get a bigger discount now but the part ex for my old car would have been way less.

Thanks everyone for your info really useful, keep them coming!

Haven't got to the price negotiations yet as I'm wanting to try a 1.9 Roomster and a 1.4 tdi fabia estate(have just sold the wifes Mk1 Fabia estate)which is happening Friday.

Have been slightly put off the Roomster as it seems to suffer huge depreciation and what the dealer said didn't help, the fact that Skoda are offering £1500 off the Roomster.

On Autotrader I saw a 1.9 tdi 3 Roomster on a 08 plate for £8999 and they are 14k Rec OTR:eek:

Will see how they both drive and how they will suit our needs.

i found only one out of 4 would give me a discount but it was to far away. most as mentioned above would rather go bust than give discount. one thought as i was in combats and had my daughter with me that i couldnt afford a new car and lost my business. another thought i was too young and was time wasting so lost my business. the one that go my business did answer my questions, took me serious even after i had a mental at him for the way other skoda dealers had treated me, but gave me an excellent deal on my trade in even if they couldnt knock anything off the factory order.

Be aware some garages will try and sell you anything but the one you want. i had one garage who wouldnt listen to me. told him i wanted red or black no other colour and kept coming back to me with blue and jumbo pack which didnt interest me, in the end i went to the garage i got the car from and just went for something different which would have to be purpose built and not be a car sat at ellesmere port waiting for someone to buy it.

If you are offered the add ons such as Supagard/Autoglym and GAP etc then remember these are negotiable as well.

These little extra's form a nice little bonus for the Sales Person as they are quite a large margin. You should be able to get a good GAP RTi policy for sub £200 for a 3 year term online so that should be your target.

The protection packs typically cost between £50 - £100 for the products plus a bit of labour for installing so £150 would be a good minimum IMHO.

yes but what amount did you have to put down to get that price per month and how many miles have you put down a year
