New Superb Group Test in Auto Express.

Featured Replies

This weeks Auto Express has tested the New Superb SE 2.0TDi 140 against the Mondeo Titanium X, Audi A4 2.0 TDi SE and a 2 year old BMW 520d..............And the Superb beat the lot:D.

Verdict against the Mondeo: As a family car, the Superb makes a lot of sense. With its vast boot and unsurpassed rear legroom, it's very practical. Not only is the Skoda cheaper than the Mondeo it has stronger residual prices, too, making it an excellent buy.

Verdict against the Audi A4: The Superb has all the credentials to make it a good executive choice.Cabin quality is impressive, while refinement and performance are excellent.Company car tax is cheaper than the A4's aswell.

Verdict against the BMW 520d: In a close-run contest, the Skoda edges out its used premium-brand rival - the Superb drives well, is better equipped and has more space. As the new buy, the Skoda has a full 3 year warranty, too.

The Superb is heaped with praise, and they even go as far as to say that against the A4, the Superb has more power and kit with similar refinement and quality, making it a more sensible, if less image-conscious, option.

But then unfortunately they probably won't get to experience the totally cr*p customer support you get from some (not all but a lot of them) dealers and the reg plate will be known as an AE car very quickly too so the dealers will know to make an effort.

:confused::confused: can someone translate please ?

Guess he is simply saying that you wont get great back up from the dealers unless you happen to be driving one of the press fleet/jurno cars - which they may give preferential treatment to?

Exactly.

As soon as the car hits AutoExpress as a long term car the reg plate is known to the dealer networks and they make an extra effort.

IMHO Skoda have some of the worst customer service I've ever had the misfortune to experience.

They have a few very good dealers, but most are only concerned about getting the money and don't care if you're happy.

Bets that, if the same test was in Motocar, the Mist Wagon would have won, with the Audi second and s0d the fact it's a far smaller car? ;)

am i being thick - at the bottom of the first page on the auto express test it says "read on to find out more" but then there are no more pages ?

Look up the page, top right, there are the three cars the Skoda is tested against. Each "versus" review has its own page summary.

i see. not obvious really !! i thought "dont want to read about the other cars first i want to read about the superb" LOL

If you check out all the info on all 4 cars you will see that Auto express has there fuel consumption at below 500 miles, for the Skoda, shurly this must be a mistake even the 130 PD does between 5 to 6 hundred miles per tank and that when its pushed hard ,I have had almost 900 on a long run

Based on the quoted consumption for the TDI140 (47.9mpg), and a 60 litre tank, then it should be around 633 miles. In reality, I'm averaging around 40mpg from my TDI140, so around 530 miles seems more realistic. It's still more than AutoExpress are quoting, but I guess their driving might have mostly been around town, where under 500 miles is perfectly possible.

I'd love to know what you did to get 900 miles out of a tank. Even if I drove my 130PD Superb like a nun, I never got more than about 590 miles out of a tank.

Bagpuss.

Lets have a closer look at these findings, none of the following is aimed at the thread starter btw.

Well as the Mondeo will hit the road a minimum 10% lower on average than the Superb will due to Ford dealing and Skoda not, as for residuals has anyone traded one in yet 2 weeks after buying it? and ime the Mondeo is worth as much as a Superb in real dealer terms, try getting book price for your Superb, ain't happening.

Verdict against the Audi A4: The Superb has all the credentials to make it a good executive choice.Cabin quality is impressive, while refinement and performance are excellent.Company car tax is cheaper than the A4's aswell.

No comparison here, the A4 is a small car and the Superb is a large car, offer anyone the choice of the two and I bet they choose the A4 unless they are a taxi driver or have a large family.

What a laugh to run the Superb up against such a legend of a car, it's like having dinner with Miss Minogue and then going home to bed with a Dingle bird *think Corry*

So they should, it's no doubt a good car, but it's deffo the trustworthy midfielder who arrived on a free transfer that give 100% all the time, rather than Ronaldo.

Complete tosh these reviews are, and the awards, the Fiat Multipla won car of the year one year, does that explain what I mean?

I have had almost 900 on a long run

Hmmm. Right.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

C'mon Skip, turn the speedo back to read MPG rather than KPG

working on 850 miles you did 71mpg in a two ton slab not allowing for what was left and in the lines still at the time.:finger::D

You know he didn't. Unless he was doing an Inverness to London round trip and he broke down in London and returned on the back of an AA flatback.

I filled up near Leon in France and got back to the Scottish borders 867 miles and the fuel light came on 6 miles from home. 5 up and full boot

The car had done nearly 150k then so was nicely run in

Don't forget most of the diesel sold in France is the good old oily stuff without all the sheit added

From where I live to New-quay in Cornwall is 485 miles, we can do it easily on less than 3/4s of a tank with a 6 berth caravan

And its now done 290k

is Leon somewhere near Lyon ?:D

did you drive all the way yourself ? ....perhaps your co-driver stopped and filled up with fuel whilst you were asleep ?:D

that works out about 49mpg with a 6 berth caravan on

in the words of one Victor Meldrew..."I dont believe it" :)

Isn't Leon actually in Spain? :D

Leon is in Spain (in Castilla y Leon), north north west Spain.

Lyon is in France, halfway beween Dijon and Marseille

quiet correct i am sure....i think our "right foot made of feathers" poster was actually referring to France.

Yup, and I just checked the mileage between Lyon and borders - he's about right at 850 or so.

Seems pie in the sky to me...

Didn't Clarkson recently do a trip in an A6 or similar - London to Edinburgh return, about 820 miles - only just made it, and that was with super careful driving, lots of coasting, radio and air con well and truly off...?

Actually, it was a 4.2 TDI A8 that Clarkson used. The A8 does have a 90 litre tank though, so it was still only getting around 40mpg.

I can remember getting an average of 60mpg out of my old Superb, but that was only one up with me watching the instantaneous consumption all the time to make sure I was being really efficient (which was a right pain in the a*se).

That's still only 792 miles with the tank being completely empty.
