Yes its Lyon, my French is dell boy and it was almost 4 AM when I posted1.gif

so thats how you got really high MPG....you were actually in Del Boy's plastic pig van (only wishing you were in a superb )!!!

I have managed to get 750 miles from 55litres of derv in my Toledo so an extra 150miles on a run on a larger tank can be doable.

There are plenty of people on one of the VAG forums who have done 900miles in Passats....

Lets just say from my point of view anyone who can get 55-60mpg out of a Superb is at the top end of things imo, this would have to be running light i.e no passengers and at night on a clear motorway as well.

Having been a cabby for 20+ yrs I've heard some wonderful figures out of some of them over the yrs, the Cavalier 2.5 V6 auto that did 28mpg under urban conditions, the 2.0 Sierra that did 45mpg under urban conditions all stop start use btw.

It led me to conclude that they either were liars or simply couldn't do maths full stop, a cabby is a funny breed, he will have the most economical car that no one else can get near, and he will also be doing high mpg @ high speed as he always seems to be able to cover 100 miles in half the time it takes everyone else:rolleyes:

Would you like to take the doorstep challenge????

You come up here and fill the Superb to the brim, (now there something some forgot, you can get another gallon and a half in If you press the air vent to one side and slowly fill to the top of the neck)

Then drive 850 miles and see how much is left,

850 to 900 is easily obtainable on a long run, at a steady 55 to 60 get it into 5Th and it will almost drive its self without the use of the accelerator

So there's no stopping then, it's all 55mph from start to finish, not wishing to fall out with you over it but when you state a tank of fuel it means a tank of fuel which is 60 litres, not 60 litres + another 7 litres in the pipe which, even accounting for this I still can't see it, and especially not loaded up either, I can't prove or disprove what you say is true or not, but if it is I suggest you call the Guiness book of records because you are posting a figure that is nearly 300 miles more than the average owner can achieve here, and I know ya lying cos no cabby drives at 55mph on an empty motorway.

Your correct not every cabby sticks to the limit, and I would be lying if I said that I always did when empty in my Octy, and I have had points in the past all sp30s

When I have my family or any punters in the cab I stick to the limits life is precious and punters deserve the same respect as the family after all they are paying for my service and I always aim to provide the best I can.

As you get older you do tend to slow down a bit, have a caramel moment so to speak, and the car has to be paid for so it needs to last and it wont if its hammered all the time, I will happily sit at 60 on the motorway all day long and 50 on A and B roads if conditions allow

Tell me about it, I find myself 1 - not bothered to rush around anymore, I watch the lads who are still sub 35yrs old and the odd one whose over 50 still pedal jocking it, and 2 - there's too many things that enter the road space without looking or thinking, with both material and organic bodywork that they don't seem to care about.

In the surreal world of "cabby fuel economy", I know one block who got mid-20s from a Volvo 240, replaced it with a Rover 3500 (SD1), and saw his fuel consumption improve to low 30s. (based on his claims, but backed up by how much less often he was visiting our mutual friend who ran a filling station).

Laughable isn't it, the SDi was a 15mpg machine V8, an old mate whose no longer with us used to say to me....isn't it funny how we always get the crap car when it comes to the juice?

I knew another guy who could do a 200 mile trip, 100 miles of it being B roads in 2 hours and still get 60mpg from his then Citroen BX estate, same guy used to lock the car doors with women in, interrogate them if they liked curry, and would arrive back on their doorstep an hour later with 2 Pathia's saying I thought you might like to eat, we had him removed quickly before he became a real problem to have to deal with.

The V8 SD1 was probably doing about 50% local hires in an area where you could reckon in spending most of the trip at 30 to 35mph, and the other half airport runs at 70ish. As I said, he always bought fuel from the same place, so I'm not just relying on his talk.

I don't believe a 100mph trip average from a BX, but I have had 60mpg at 60mph trip average from 200ish miles mixed single and dual carriageway As out of a BX with an XUD19.

PMSL @ 100mph trip average from a BX. I've only ever managed a 100mph average once, and that was a 180 mile journey, 75% motorway and needed sustained periods of 140mph+...

Anyway, the New Superb. The Mondeo is a great car, so to beat that is saying something. As for a 2 year old BMW - I'm not keen on that shape 5 series, so yes the Superb probably would get my money if I was in that market.

And regarding dealer service, there's good and bad dealers for every marque, it really is the luck of the draw in my experience... :)

Like to see the superb in the flesh....because having had a spin in a new mondeo titanium tdci,I have to say it was a fantastic car...looks,interior and oomph

You might, repeat might, manage it from the 16v given quiet and fairly straight roads, probably on a mirky night but not actually with damp surfaces, but no way from a diesel, since the turbo diesel was the only one to even be capable of breaking the ton.

just goes to show we all like different things. i thought the seats in the mondeo were awful .cheap feel and a poor anatomical shape. the dash was cheesy looking with too much "sprayed silver plastic". simply not classy enough. i agree the superb has a few "trim issues" but nothing that stares you in the face and nothing you are touching all the time (think mondeo steering wheel buttons looking like a £20 stereo from currys !)

like i say - each to their own !!

Agreed, I looked at around one in a Ford showroom and was deeply disappointed with the interior and the exterior. I think it looks fat and bloated in it's everyday 'rep spec' and only in the high end with all the gubins does it look reasonable.

I like the new shape superb now I have seen one in the flesh and was very impressed.

Just to prove I am not BSing anyone I have a spreadsheet with my economy in and record it.

I don't recall adressing you over this mate, but however your average figures show a return on 57mpg, so read my post you quoted me on again please, especially the 55-60mpg bit.

Column headers would be nice. Place the cursor in cell A2, and use Window -> Freeze Panes to display row 1 at all times (Except Excel 2007).

AS for the Mondeo - I'm the same having looked around one. Nice exterior (although the Estate is still a pig in my view), but inside looked like a cheap 1980's midi hi-fi - too much plastic, way too many buttons, and didn't like the seats - and this was in a nice Titanium model

For the amount of gear, the pricing is way off the Superb. Yeah, the Superb interior may not be "innovative", but I think it looks solid, stylish, understated, and based on reviews I've read, really logically laid out. I was lost in the Ford.

Mondeo plaudits have always been towards the quality of the drive first and foremost. As a soon to be Superb owner, i have to concede that. But spending most of my working week hacking up and down the motorways, i'm convinced the Skoda will be the nice place to be.

As a final comment on Ford - the attitude in my local dealer was shockingly bad - really didn't seem bothered, and actually made the point (presumably trying to tell me how popular the Mondeo was), that "You'll be waiting absolutely ages for one mate..." Didn't even have a brochure for me to take, and this was a seriously large modern dealership.

Well,I actually run a mazda. After two Audi A4's I had the Octavia vRS mk1.Brilliant for everything but a poor interior.

When mk 2 came out I thought what a huge jump in interior quality.

I just thought it (ford) was a cracking drive and a nice interior (although too many gadgets for my liking but thats how I feel about all new cars)

Both cars will be worth nothing after a few years anyway! Hope the superb sells well though but I don't think you will get many reps to think outside the box as it were and be sensible enough to buy a very nice skoda....still,despite all of their progress and the great cars they make.

Due to the large amounts of Fords that are built, as soon as you buy one and drive it off the dealers forecourt you loose half the value

How much would the Mondeo be worth after 3 years compared to the Superb

And they still have not fixed the fuel pump problems that they had on the old one as a driver here has found out luckily under warranty

49mpg with a caravan on the back lol. Most I av managed with a caravan on the back is 38mpg.

if i try hard i can get 20mpg with my caravan on

(but there again it is a petrol)

i dont think it is possible to get 49mpg with a caravan on unless you live on a motorway and you camp at the service station 100 miles away and you drive at 40 mph in top gear, downhill.....with a strong tailwind....tailgating a lorry....
