Clutch or flywheel ?

Featured Replies

I had the clutch replaced on my re-mapped Octy RS about 5k miles ago and it's slipping again :(

It's worse in the higher gears (motorway etc) and seems to pick up ok initially and then start slipping at around 3-4000 rpm. There are no unusual noises and gears change fine.

My mechanic will replace the clutch under warranty but has suggested the DM flywheel may be shot and this will cost me about £500 - £600 all in.

Does anyone have a view on whether these symtoms can be caused by the flywheel ?

Thanks.

I would not have thought so tbh, does sound like the clutch is goosed more than DMF.

My knowledge is limited though !!

I'd not think so either, and I think it's unlikely that a remap wore out a decent quality clutch that quick either.

That shouldnt be down to a remap, my dads octavia vrs was remapped by jabba at about 6k and he part ex'd it was over 50k miles on the origional clutch.

Thanks for responses.

I'll see what the mechanic says; just wanted some views as although he seems an honest enough guy, I'm sure he'll suggest flywheel even if he's not sure so he doesn't have to cover this under warranty...

I had a new clutch and flywheel fitted on my car.

Slipped like a bitch to be honest.

He checked everything, couldnt understand

Checked the old clutch release bearing against the new one and they were different sizes!.

Spoke to TPS(genuine VAG parts specialist) and they informed him that they new one was the correct one, safe to say ive had to reuse my old clutch release bearing and everything is fine!

on dm flywheels the is a tolerence on how far you can turn them. at citroen if you can turn it so many teeth past a certain point, the dm flywheel is knackered. im sure that skoda have a similar thing?

I had my Octy Mk1 mapped to 250bhp, this blew the standard clutch through the gearbox housing! wont be doing that again. the std clutch is weak as hell and dual mass flywheels were invented purely to fall to bits, rattle like hell and a means of allowing garages to make even more money! I hate to suggest Jabba sport as I'm not a fan, but they do a corrado g60 conversion consisting of lightened g60 flywheel and hd clutch rated to 350hp but dont believe that, copes well with 250bhp though. Costs about £450. I wouldnt use the standard flywheel n clutch set up with anything other than standard vrs. Usually fails after any decent remap. My G60 conversion & clutch will be up for sale shortly, wont handle 400hp so got to get rid.
