Replacing Door bump strips

Featured Replies

1st off, hello - first post and all that!

Just this evening, by some fluke I managed to open the rear door on the drivers side just as my wife was opening the drivers door and caught the bump strip, lifting it off the door and bending it

I've spent a good while trawling here and on Google without success - is it something I can replace myself or should I take it to my dealer? Is it actually called a 'bump strip'? Where can I get a replacement?

Any help gratefully received!

Thanks!

I'd just try getting some strong sticky stuff and sticking it back on. If not, the local dealer will be able to help, for a small fee.

Shouldn't be too difficult to replace yourself TBH

The dealers sell them individually and the have adhesive strips already fitted.

Just make sure you remove any signs of the old adhesive from the door before fitting.

I changed the ones on my Passat from black to chrome and on that car there are pins to locate into holes in the door so fool proof. I'd test fit without removing the tapes from the adhesive strips.

They shouldn't to very expensive, probably under £20 plus vat.

If they are bent I'd replace rather than straighten but using a hair dryer or heat gun may work, kind of like they have a shape memory and when heated they go back to the right shape.

Welcome by the way.

If you can bend them back to shape (always difficult as they seem so fragile) then 3M make some superb double sided adhesive tape, as said above remove, clean thoroughly with white spirit, meths or carb cleaner (remember to repolish the bits that overlap) then restick after a dry test.

Failing that a new one comes ready prepped so just clean & stick as above.

Last but not least don't forget to shout at the wife for being so silly to open the door at the same time

Good luck!

I replaced the offside rear trim a couple of weeks ago. Tracked them down to here - Garage Equipment, Car Workshop Tools, Motor Parts and Accessories, Nationwide, UK - Skoda Parts & Accessories

£13.99 for rear but £8.99 postage.

Local Skoda garage sorted me our with one for about £15, so went for that. Very easy to take off and replace. Managed to get the car in the sun for a while and the adhesive came off virtually in one go.

Rallyred had the right idea with heating the strip gently with a heat gun. If it's bent the best way is to lay it somewhere flat. As it heats up it'll become more flexible and under it's own weight should begin to resume it's old shape.

Don't rush it, melting it is not the idea here. Take your time and let the heat penetrate throughout the material, not just the surface.

Then as everyone else says just whack some adhesive or double sided tape on the back and reattach.

Good luck man.
