going to look at vrs

Featured Replies

as the title says, im off to look at a vrs tomorrow, its low mileage, looks clean, spoke to the place selling it, and asked if belt had been cdone, he said no and that it wasnt due till 80,000, but a mechanic had checked it? and said it was ok. i rang skoda gave them the details of the car they said the belt should have been done at 4 years. should i leave it and look for another one?

It should be done at four years (or 60,000 miles). I wouldn't necessarily walk away, but I would be pushing them to change the belt, or pay for it to be done elsewhere.

Whilst it's being changed, it's advised that you change the water pump too as they can be problematic.

yeah, it does look like a well looked after car, only done 43000 on a 52 (03). i know a chap who runs a vw specialist, might see how much he would do it for? would do it myself but if they are willing to pay....

I agree with VRSPhil, don't walk away if it ticks all the boxes dont worry about the engine, they're bombproof! just negotiate the price to allow for you taking it to have the belt done. If you change the waterpump make sure it has the steel impeller, the standard ones have a plastic impeller that tends to go 'brittle' and dissintegrate. Look for signs that the mileage is correct, i take it it does not have dealer service history if the belts not been done, however the garage can't be that bad as the usual answer to the timing belt is 'of course sir, nothing to worry about there!'
