More noise

Featured Replies

My Octy makes more noise. I've got it service done[ synthetic oil,...etc]thinking that it will reduce noise.

Also It makes continuous noise like [whisp whisp whisp.....etc]. I even got the conveyor belt changed near to the tensor.

Also when I drive on a long ride it make wrill sound.... Please suggest what could be the problem.

Also when I paddle the clutch, it gives a feel of repulsion. What could be the reason for this?

I'm not sure I entirely understand this, but will try and help, or at least ask some pertinent questions, anyway.

Which type of service did you have done:- oil/inspection, intermediate, or full with filters?

What sort of mileage has the car done?

When was the cambelt last changed?

Is the "whisp whisp whisp noise" happening whenever the engine is running, only when its hot, only when it's cold, only when the car is moving?

A "wrill sound" - sorry, I don't understand this. Same questions as the whisp sound.

"When I paddle...repulsion" - I don't know what you mean here either. All clutches have springs in them which will push your foot upwards. When you're driving, do you get a feeling that the engine is accelerating, but the car isn't?

Hi Ken,

Please see my inline response in blue.

Which type of service did you have done:- oil/inspection, intermediate, or full with filters?

Oil with oilfilter, fuel filter replaced due to its long run of 51k kms, and other general service.

What sort of mileage has the car done?

It has run 51,000 kms approx 31k miles.

When was the cambelt last changed?

Recently at the time of service because it was damaged [Rat came into the belt, common problem in India].

Is the "whisp whisp whisp noise" happening whenever the engine is running, only when its hot, only when it's cold, only when the car is moving?

When I start the engine, I can clearly hear this noise but when it is moving it disappears.

A "wrill sound" - sorry, I don't understand this. Same questions as the whisp sound.

When I moving at say speed of 60kmph or more, this kind of sound I could make out while moving. I'm sure it is not due to wind but this may be wind sound, still I'm unclear about this.

"When I paddle...repulsion" - I don't know what you mean here either. All clutches have springs in them which will push your foot upwards. When you're driving, do you get a feeling that the engine is accelerating, but the car isn't?

Also for your information, clutch replacement was done at 33k kms [ = 16k miles] When I paddle the clutch to change the gear, the clutch paddle gives a vibration feel as If I should not paddle the clutch... Hence I refered it as repulsive feel [repulsion].

Last point could be a knackered release bearing or DMF.

I wonder:-

The whisp noise, if it's only when you start the engine and move off, might be the secondary air pump, and if you're only hearing it now for the first time, I'd say the synthetic oil has quietened the engine, if I'm right about it. Otherwise, are all the cambelt cover bolts secure? I've heard a vaguely similar noise from a loose lower cover (different make, but still...)

The wrill sound. It might be airspeed related; check that all the windows (and the sunroof if applicable [i don't know the Indian equipment specs]) are properly closed.

I'm still not following what you mean by "paddle the clutch". Could you describe how you change gear in terms of what foot and hand movements you make in what order when?

I was not using synthetic oil before but now after service it is fully synthetic oil. Still there is whisp noise at the start only.

Whril sound is observed when all the windows are closed [my car does not have sun roof] Especially when I drive at 80-100MPH or more, I can clearly hear this sound.

Regarding paddling the clutch [my OCty has manual transmission]

1) Engine turned ON

2) Assert the clutch [push the clutch]

3) While pushing the clutch I feel this repulsion or vibration.. May as you mentioned it is either knackered release bearing or DMF.. I'm talking to my service advisor on this.

4) change the gear with hand [left hand as in India]

5) Slowly release the clutch and paddle the accelerator and go on.

Also advice when I release the clutch, there is jerk in the movement.

Put some tape over the joins in the wing mirrors and the door leading edges and see if the noises go away.

At 80-100mph it sounds like it could be wind noise caused by something being moved slightly.

I'd agree, this is sounding like a flywheel or release beating issue (they're in the same place so inspecting one means you can inspect the other), and the Whril sound has to be either wind noise or an air leak in the turbo - intercooler - plenum chamber piping. Check which by driving at the critical engine speed in a lower gear.
