4x4 true MPG

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm thinking of either a Superb TDI or an Octavia 1.8T 4x4 to replace / supplement my 18 year old Audi 100 quattro.

My Audi does 28-32mpg day in day out, on mostly A roads (commuting 100 miles a day).

I like the idea of TDI (had an Audi A4 TDI for 5 years) but I also like the security given by 4 wheel drive.

My budget is £4000, for which I can get a 2003/2004 TDI Superb, or a similar age Octavia 4x4.

I also like the VRs, but they are only 2WD (I think).

So, my question to the audience is.....

what MPG do people get out of the Octavia 4x4 (true MPG measured brim to brim, not going by the computer, or "I get 20 miles to a fiver")

Cheers

Steve

on a run i've managed just over 400 miles to a tank(55 litres) but tbh i'm normally trying to use as much fuel as possible :)

so i have got an average of 35mpg on a tank(on this trip i was travelling from edinburgh to oxford on nearly all motorways but i just had abigger turbo fitted so i iwas driving at a decent rate and kept flooring it) but at the same time i've also managed 13.5mpg(160miles to a tank :D ) whilsts doing a track day.

Mine usually does between 24 and 29 commuting (very mixed driving over 10/12 miles), 35 on a run. I can get 30 commuting and 40 on a run but that wasn't why I had it remapped. If you drive like an old woman why would you want the 4x4 as it just makes it slower and thirstier in standard trim, just buy a Vrs to start with.

I got the 4x4 as I wanted the safety and to be honest it was a lot cheaper than a vrs to buy. the money I saved went towards an LPG conversion(no really noticable difference in performance - manages to keep up with my mates MR2 roadster to a ton and then leaves him behind and thats standard 150 bhp on LPG) added to this with LPG available for 49.9ppl in Cardiff I 'm averaging 23-30mpg on GAS equivalent to 8-10p per mile so always at least 50mpg equivalent even if thrashed and hoping to improve this on the next gas service and also getting a remap. after remap power is equivalent to a remapped vrs as the engine is the same. on petrol the best I got was 37 on a run, but if you only want economy you wouldn't be looking at a vrs would you?

I would want 4x4 because you don't do stupid wheelspins pulling away in the wet from junctions, also you go round corners quicker.

But most of the time I am just driving either down the M4 or A4 to work, 48 miles each way. But it is nice to have the grip when you need it.

Thanks for the replies.

I agree. I have actively tried to induce wheel spin and mostly failed, the car just seems to dig in and go(unlike SWMBO's passat -lethal in the wet!)

so the formula looks like this 4x4+1.8+T+LPG=:D

My TDi Octavia has averaged 43mpg over the last 1770 miles according to the trip computer, which is a mix of around town, short trips, and longer runs. It also reads an average speed of 29mph, and a total of 60 hours and 30 minutes driving time. Some claim that they will achieve 50+mpg, and mine will on a long run. It's not re-mapped so far as I know, but it pulls like a train. I'd like to know if anyone else's car is GENUINELY different, and if there's anything wrong with mine.

I have seen 60mpg on the average readout for a very short period of time, but that was a journey that was more downhill than up, and driving like a nun........

Same with our 1999 Audi A4 TDI (110bhp non PD engine).

We got 42-44mpg, over 50000 miles (from 100000 miles to 150000 miles), round town, "motorway" speeds, general driving.

People always say "A4 tdi, 55+MPG." I don't know what planet they are on, if you drive with the turbo "in" (i.e. above about 2600rpm), the MPG you get is 42-44. If you sit at 60mph on the motorway all day (and don't get pulled over!), you would get high MPG, but my time is more valuable than my money (i.e. I'd rather spend £5 extra on fuel and get there an hour earlier).

Steve

now me personally I'd rather spend £5 less and get there 2 hour earlier :D

I have my 4x4 on lpg and only average around 23 mpg on lpg. I have kept a log of litres filled v miles done over a 90 miledaily commute for the last 3 months. The onboard indication shows around 26-33 mpg on the gas, depending how I drive!!

The LPG does have a little less oohmmfff than petrol, but this may be down to the settings in the LPG ecu. I will be getting this checked soon.

At 49.9p a litre you can'y go wrong!

mine showed up 441mpg last night :P

but realistically is does about 32mpg...

Again as the others have said 28mpg round town and lots of little trips, when i was doing 80 miles a day was getting 38mpg. Fuel consumption (real not trip computer) didnt change after remap either:thumbup:

Diff I know but to give you a comparrison mate,

Octy vRS: I used to get 7.4-8.2 mpl brim to brim. in std trim between huddersfield and catterick and few shop runs durin the week (1.5 mile both ways)

after CAI and a generic remap to 210bhp i was gettin 7.1-8.5 dependin on how I drove.

now with all the mods in my sig and 226bhp custom map have had 6.8 - 7.4 goin between bristol and Haverfordwest. thats adv 70 mph on motorway and keepin her goin on the smaller roads after the A40 lol

billy

and in wet she handles fine as i found last night.

just to add I look at gettin 45-50 mile from each notch on the fuel dial. norm get it too.

mate in his mk2 sport TDI couldnt keep up at all!

Got my 4x4 3 years ago and I don't think I'd buy a 2WD car again.

I missed this thread first time round so didn't contribute then. My 1.8T 4X4 Estate has averaged 31.77mpg over 27596 miles, 22000+ of which are since a Jabba remap.

1.9 TDi 4x4 - I average out just over 40 mpg
