Juddering/jerking on gear change

Featured Replies

Any ideas on this my 98 octy has done 69,000 miles and recently its been juddering after each gear change (at first i was telling the mrs off:D)

But then it was doing it with me, No matter how much I use the clutch it still judders then settles down. The car idles fine its only on changing gear that it does this.

I have noticed that 3rd 4th and 5th are not as bad its worse on the lower gears and gets better with the higher gears. The clutch bite is low and not high.

Would a gearbox oil change sort this, I am not loosing any fluids and there are no leaks under the car.

Thanks guys.

I'd certainly check the engine mounts (in particular the rear mount) first.

You don't seem to be having trouble getting into gear so I'm not sure that a gearbox oil change would help.

I'd agree that it sounds like something to do with the engine mounts as the transition moves the engine. As the gear change itself sounds okay, sounds like the clutch is okay and the extra juddering in the lower gears sounds like it might be related to the lower end pull?

You could always let the good lady drive again and continue blaming her, which you could give as a cause, but not sure it's a good health move! ;)

Cheers guys, where abouts is the rear mounts for the engine.

Would it be a big job to replace them if they are found to be worn?

Thanks

I would check the rear mount first. This is also known as a torque link and I think this is the most likely culprit.

You need to drop the undertray. If you draw a line between the driveshafts, this mount crosses it.

You really need ramps or axle stands to change it although I know of one person who drove head on up a curb so both front wheels were on the pavement. Easy to change but remember to change the bolts too.

Torque:

Subframe 20Nm+90deg

Trans: 40Nm+90deg
