Smell of petrol in car

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I have a 1.4 Mpi Classic Fabia (2000)

I've noticed that I get quite a strong smell of petrol in the car when the heater or fan is on and especially when stationary.

I can't see any petrol leaks under the car.

I'm also getting poor fuel economy, and it feels like there is a lack of power.

In April and May this year the MAP sensor was changed, and the temperature sensor, and the air filter. Oil was also changed in May.

I've already posted about the lack of power and fuel econ, I'm just wondering if this smell of petrol helps pinpoint what I should be looking at changing/checking: lambda sensor? Spark plugs?

Thanks

Ian

All this suggests you have a petrol leak, maybe from the injector leak off pipes or somewhere. Either way you *need* to get it seen to asap.

Thanks very much for the quick reply - do you have any suggestions how I check this out for myself? Is it a repair job I can do?

Thanks

You need the evaporative system checked out. My bet is the charcoal canister has depleated and is no longer filtering the fumes from the tank.

Thanks very much. How do I check the evaporative system? Is it a job for my local garage?

I checked this guide on how to change the evap temp sensor - http://briskoda.net/technical-guides/fabia-evap-temp-sensor-how-pics/66182/

But is this only for car's with air con? Mine is a big standard Classic - no air con

Cheers

Fault code check is a start, along with a final control test on the N80 valve so yes its a VAG COM/Dealer job.

Thanks Unit 18 - I made an alteration to my post above to say that I don't have air con - are you assuming I do? (I know very little about all this - but have just been charged £160 quid by a Nationwide garage to fix a suspension problem and I can't bear to spend even more at a Skoda garage just a month later!)

The evap temp sensor and the evaporated system are two different things.

You fuel tank has a vent to atmostphere. It needs this or the fuel tank would suck straight in as soon as the fuel pump started up. However its neither safe or enviromentally safe to vent the tank straight to atmostphere. So it is vented through a charcaol canister which removes the smell and then pumped back into the engine to burn off again.

Ross

Thanks again! Do you think this would affect the fuel consumption then?

I would think so in some way shape or form yes.

I diagnostic test will highlight anything.

Right - so I need someone with VAG COM to kindly do a diagnostic test for me! I live in West Yorkshire...!
