N Wireless PCI card advice

Featured Replies

I now have a BT Home Hub 2.0 for my net connections and I need a PCI card for my desktop to connect it but I'm not sure which one to go for.

I have seen this one:

Amazon.co.uk: Edimax EW-7728In 802.11n PCI WiFi Card: Electronics & Photo

which seems really cheap but I have never heard of Edimax before.

I have also been looking at this one:

Linksys.com ? Products/Home/Networking/Adapters/RangePlus/WMP110

I know Cisco stuff is good (isn't it?) but it's way more (better quality?).

Can anyone advise me on which card to go for or is there something else out there?

(I'm not IT minded so ease of installation counts quite highly)

For ease of intallation you might prefer a USB adaptor, as you don't have to open the PC.

I had thought about that but I've fitted a modem card before so hopefully I'll get one of these to work and it's a bit more permanent than a USB adaptor.

In that case I'd consider Linksys or Netgear. They're usually OK, and fairly comparable. Linksys is Cisco's consumer brand. Cisco-branded stuff costs £££££, Linksys is a bit cheaper.

Nothing wrong with Linksys or Netgear. I used to avoid Belkin like the plague but they're better these days.

I got a Belkin USB dongle after the Netgear one that came with the router kept making my PC freeze. I'd be wary of a PCI card personally unless your PC is in the middle of the room, as otherwise the antenna will be facing the wall behind a mass of RF-emitting gubbins, so your reception will be rubbish. Far better IME to get a USB dongle, a USB extension lead, and put the dongle a short distance away from the PC. My belkin dongle actually has a long lead and a little pedestal so you can do just that!

I'd prob go with the Linksys personally as all my networking stuff from them, plus the support people are really good.

I did have a PCI adapter die/malfunction but that got sent back to them and they sent me a new one. Dunno about now but you used to get a 3 year guarantee with Linksys stuff.

Netgear do a USB dongle that gives the best range and reception. Cant remember the exact part no. as its a while since i bought mine. I have the home hub 2.0 aswell and it works perfectly with it and i can even get a reception 100m down the road with it.

It cost £50 from PCWorld and its the one that is rated at 300m range. Ill try and find the exact model for you.
