Clunk when braking

Featured Replies

Hello;

My 1998 Octavia TDI makes a 'clunking' sound when braking - particuarly at low speeds. This is both when I push, and release the pedal, as if you can hear part of the mechanism moving.

The brake pads and discs are reasonably new, and it's had a recent brake check, so I feel safe... but it is disconcerting. I'll get it booked in for someone to take a look, but just wondered if anyone has any ideas...

Thanks

Dave

I would look at the control arm bushes, specifically the bigger rear bush on the control arm as that can cause this if its knackered. If it is this go for the solid TT bush rather than the voided Octi bush and you will never here it again

Sorry to necro post this but i have the same symptoms, Just going to jack her up and check those bushes.

Can you give me a link to the solid bushes you were speaking of. (have all the tools and presses needed for bush replacements)

Regards

Richard

i had the same problem couple of weeks ago and corrected itself few days later

not sure if something got stuck somewhere

Always hitting speed bumps.

Its Front Right thats at fault which would co-inside with a speed bump hit.

If it dont settle down in next few days ill get a proper look at it, the bushes do look a bit cracked too.

Forgot to say that its happened after changing my rear brake pads, but is that just coindidence.

Also forgot to say mine is a 2003 mark 1 version.

I managed to find superbro bushes on the cheap, will hit you with a link when I find it. For the exta £15 I paid I would say they are well worth it. Have made a big difference.

We couldn't get the bushes in without a press. A bench vice will do the job as well.

Mine is suffereing intermittent clunking on braking since yesterday when it was MOTeed.

Not all the time but tends to be at low speeds.

This started happening shortly after driving away with new front tyres fitted immediately post test by MOT test station.

Surely an MOT test followed by two front tyres being changed cannot produce a clunking on the right front wheel when braking.

I noticed it was more frequent today.

I will ring them tomorrow but any ideas now would be welcome.

Thanks to all responders.

I have found out the cause of the problem.

The Roll Bar Drop link was broken.

It is only made of plastic so after 140,000 miles, lifting the car to change the tyre was maybe too much for it.

We replaced with Delphi Part No TC2026

It cost £14.00 & took 15 mins to fit, total bill £28.00 inc VAT

I will buy another for the other side now for fitment next service.

My conclusions from this are

This car is still proving low cost to maintain.

This was a definite case of bark being much worse than bite.

I see plastic and metal ones being offered on EBay. Is the metal original equipment or an upgrade?

Roll Bar Link

I know this won't help you but my old octy did it for years, never failed an mot and never got picked up at a service even when I asked them to look into it. I never did find out what caused it but even though your not interested, my scenic has done it from the day I owned it to and still none the wiser. When it happens on the scenic though, you can feel it through the floor.
