Octavia Vrs TDI CR or PD?

Featured Replies

Looking at replacing my 04 Fabia VRS with an Octavia TDI VRS.

I'v seen there are some used TDI PD Vrs's which are coming down in price but wanted to know what the differences are between the PD engines and the CR engines.

Are there any real advantages between the two in terms of performance, economy/runnig costs?

I assume the CR engine is the better as its replaced the PD but how much better, and does it justify looking for a CR rather than a PD on a used car?

Also when was the CR engine introduced?

Finally, whats the DSG gear box like, is this worth looking for one with it?

I can tell you what I know which is limited really, but thought it might help, and all the advice I have recived I wanna pitch back in...

I drove the new CR vRS and a regular 2.0 140bhp PD.

The engine noise on the CR was reduced and the engine seemed smoother. It wasnt having to work as hard I spose because of the extra power it has, but seemed smoother in accelerating, and like people have noted here the delivery of power is gradual rather than a kick in the **** with the PD engines.

I also tried the DSG gearbox and was pretty sold on it.

Having never driven an automatic before but done a lot of reading up I found it did exactly what other people have said - fast, smooth gear changes. Moving the box into semi auto was good fun aswell. I didnt notice any lag in accelerating away either, or any drop out of power when changing. It just seemed to "go" which was excellent.

I am nearing the point of ordering a car and am trying to source one with a DSG as I feel for the type of driving I will do (high mileage, field based support role) it makes sense especially in conjested traffic. Will reduce driving fatigue.

However the advice I was given was sound - get to a dealer and try both set ups out both manual and DSG.

From what I have understood, the CR runs with lower emissions. However, the DSG gearbox makes it 1-2mpg less economical on average, and pushed the tax band into the cat D (£145 p/a). The manual vRS hatch is cat C (£120).

hope this helps as a starter.

Hi,

I've got a VrS CR DSG and absolutely love it

I used to have a 1.9 PD DSG : the CR engine is extremly quiet compared to the PD

Can't compare with the VrS PD as I only did a few miles in a demo model [ but I do remember the kick up the A...E that I don't get on the CR ]

My 2 cents

Vic

I've just taken delivery of a vRS CR and am very chuffed with it!!!:)

Previous car was Passat Sport TDI with the PD engine in it.... some I am reasonably well placed to compare the 2..... key observations:

- CR is a lot more economical, I am getting 45mpg without trying on an A / B road commute, I used to struggle to get 38 out of the PD on a 40 mile motorway commute - could never figure out why?!?!

- CR lacks the kick in the back of the PD, but it still pulls very strongly and has a far wider usable rev range (interstingly the CR revs to 5.4k - usable up to 5k, whereas the PD revved to 5k - but was not much point in going beyond 4.3k)

- Feels like the CR has more torque than the PD, though that may be due to the way it is delivered?

- CR is a lot quieter than a PD....

- Purely subjective, but I think it revs far more like a petrol (other than the rev limit!!!)

I was offered a PD vRS on a quicker delivery, but am very pleased that I waited for the CR, IMHO i think the engine is a lot better.....

Good POST Bob

and to answer one of your questions

The CR stared to arrive at UK dealers around mid to end July 2008

Watch out there are plenty of dealers trying to rid old stock PD VRS so you could get a great deal on one

So if there are some good deals around on the PD VRS, is it really worth holding out and paying hte extra for the CR engine, or would I be best looking for a decent deal on a PD version?

That would very much depend on you. If you don't care about the difference in driving, then go for the best deal you can get on a PD. If you do like the way the CR drives, then only you can say how much extra you are prepared to pay for that difference.
