Fatory sat nav or alternative?

Featured Replies

I've done a search but not found anything really conclusive, but what would be the best way to both improve the sound and get features such as bluetooth sat nav in a stereo. Are the cheaper ebay style brands reasonable?

Is it worth fitting the original sat nav head unit instead?

I'm quite happy to go double din. I'm also not going over board with subs and stuff just want a nice sound.

However there are budget constraints so £400 + on a nice kenwood or something is probably beyond reach?

Oh and can they have something like tom tom installed at all?

Cheers All

Have a read of the "Cheap Alterative to MFD2" thread on the Octy 2 forum - it's incredibly useful and has answered a number of posers for me.

I really fancy one of the Pioneer double din units - the F700BT or F900BT. Although not a "flush" fitting like an OEM unit, apparently the functionality surpasses the MFD3 (according to some of the VW forums I have read)

I don't think the OEM unit in a MK1 will do much for your needs.

stu if i was to put an mfd2 into my car would the connection block currently in the back of the stream mp3 go straight in or would a bit of re wiring be needed?

If you have a normal Stream without the Aux in then I think it's a straight swap. If you have the Aux in then you need to move the wires.

Trouble is as mine is a Mk 1 then the MFD2 won't actually fit will it?

Cheers

Hi Alan,

No, the MFD2 is no good for you.

Whilst it's nice to have the MFD, and the sound quality is an improvement over the Symphony, it's pretty long in the tooth now and I think there are better options. Even some of the most basic Alpine/Pioneer/Kenwood units will have better sound quality than the MFD IMHO.

The TomTom One is considerably more capable and easier to use than the MFD, and it is obviously removable so poses less of a security risk.

I can't offer much advice on Bluetooth enabled head units. I did have a Parrot CK3200 in my last car which was very good.

So to sum up my ramblings, I would go with after market specialist items rather than the MFD.

Phil.
