Vw-audi Oil Requirements

Featured Replies

A friend who has an AUDI A4 Quattro (SWEET!!!) said he got a letter from AUDI USA indicating that you should only use synthetic oil (5W-40 or 0W-40) meeting the VW 502.xxx qualification to avoid sludge build up in the 1.8 Turbo.

Also, A-USA is extending the warranty on the 1.8L Turbo due to sludge build up as a result of using the wrong oil.

Any information about this across the pond?

Thanks! :)

Excellent. :( This years coil packs.

I thought the 505.01 oil was what VAG garages used over here... and is also the same as my Millers XFE-PD oil I'll be putting in my car soon.

Devon,

He said 502.00. However, Mobil 1 0W-40 meets the VW standards 502.00, 505.00, & 503.01. So it could be all. I guess the point is that 5W or 10W-30 "veggie" oil is not what you want to use.

I've stuck to the owner's manual and used only 5W-40 Valvoline or lately 1W-40 Mobil 1. I could never keep the VW "500" stuff in my head so I picked based on viscosity and the ACEA A2/A3 tests. (Simple things for simple minds, SWMBO would say!!) The Valvoline product is excellent and performs up to 10,000 miles easily according to the oil analysis I've had performed. I'm about 2K short of 10K on the Mobil One 0W-40 and plan on testing that as well.

I used Mobil 1 for years and years but they didn't make a A2/A3 oil in 5W-40 till this year. I went to the 0W-40 as the last two winters have been really nasty cold here in the former Colony. I figured the "Zero" winter rating would help starting and ease the wear of cold starts. I does start easier when very cold. I haven't noticed any difference in gas mileage that's worth writing home about.
